Multiple extensions of temporary resident permit possible?

Could anyone tell me if multiple extensions of a temporary resident permit are possible?
My wife and I came to Canada last June to live close to our oldest son, who works in Canada,
his wife and their two daughters.
The stamps upon entry in our EU passports gave us the right to stay in Canada for 6 months.
Then we applied online for an extension, made the necessary payment and our stay was extended
with another 6 months.
Now we would like to extend our stay - we very much like the country - for another 6 month and
maybe even longer. All our qualifications still meet the CIC standards (we're financially independent).
I have the following questions:
Is a second extension possible?
Are multiple extensions in fact possible?
What is the longest period you could apply for?
Where on the internet could I find more information on this particular subject?

Technically we could of course also opt for the other solution: leave Canada and then come back,
get a new "6-month-validity" stamp in our passports and again take it from there.
In that case, I am wondering, how long would we need to be outside the country?
Where on the internet could I find more information on that?

You can get another extension.

Or You could apply for Super visa, Its ten year visa where you are allowed to stay in Canada for 2 years at stretch. But you have to get the medical insurance and your children should have certain Income Level. check www.cic.gc.ca

Or go to USA, then come back. for another six months.

Thank for your response?
Do you know for how long a period you need to be outside Canada, that is in the USA?
