Hello,

My wife is 34 years old and wants to pursue Masters in Computer Science in Canada. She graduated with a BTech at 21, and currently runs a software / website development company in Mumbai.

My questions are:
1) What is the probabiity of getting a study permit to Canada - considering age and gap between Bachelors and Masters?
2) I will be accompany her as a spouse. I am a software professional myself and we run our small software business together. I intend to work there on open work permit. Will this create an issue for visa?
3) We have a 9-year old son - will this create an issue in getting through the visa / study permit?

We do not have any issue with funds - we have the more than needed liquidity. Eventually, we do intend to migrate to Canada. In fact, our CRS score for Express Entry is currently at 425.

The reason we are opting for the Study in Canada route is to be able to get a few more extra points on the CRS score.

Kindly advice if we will face issues with the Study route or should we continue with the PR / Express Entry route.

Thanks in advance.

Think it is unlikely to be approved because the degree will not improve your employment prospects/careers. It is pretty clear from your application that you are only studying for immigration purposes. I would stick to EE.

Isn't study the pathway to immigration? I thought Canada encourages this!

If she's planning on going to a top Canadian university, I think there's some chance of approval.

Otherwise I agree with the above, I think being approved will be challenging since CIC will assume her primary purpose for coming to Canada is immigration given you and your son are planning on coming with her.

Having said that, you can always try.

Good luck.

Universities such as Guelph, McMaster, Brock, Ryerson, Western Ontario, etc. are some of the shortlisted ones. These are genuine Universities.

I'm not talking about genuine - I'm talking about top ranked.

I would focus on McMaster and Western. Drop Brock from your list.

Will chances improve if both of us apply for a Master's degree?

Is there room to improve your CRS score by improving your IELTS? That would be much easier. I would probably leave Ryerson on the list.

Yeah - I would agree with that. In addition to Ryerson, I would leave Guelph off the list. There are things Guelph is known for - but that isn't one of them.

Top schools would be Waterloo and U of T. The real issue is that you will have to convince CIC why you would return to school at this point in your life when you are running a lucrative (I assume if you say funds are no issue) business in India.

100% agreed. I might add Queen's to that as a third choice. But Waterloo and U of T definitely stand out at the top choices.

Unfortunately, there is no room to improve the CRS score.
Wife has a BTech, 34 years old and with CLB9 IELTS score - CRS comes to 425.
I have an MS (Comp Engg) from a US University, 40 years old and with CLB9 IELTS score - CRS comes to 420.
Note we haven't taken the IELTS yet (I just literally began the process a week ago).

Could you let me know why leave out Guelph? It looks pretty good from their website programs. Do they have a bad reputation with the immigration agencies?

So, to give you more clear details, even though I am a software professional I started an event management business and ran it successfully for 5.5 years, made a ton of money, but sold it last year (Oct 2016).

Wife's software business is relatively modest - it has always been profitable since 5+ years, but she balance work with home / child and therefore is not as aggressive to make it grow.

Also, I studied in the US (Masters in CS) and worked there on an H1B for 6 years from 2000 to 2009. Have been in India for 8-odd years now.

So I have a history of not immigrating to the US. Do you think this background will help in any way?
