My comments to the above:
- Canadian + US TV channels are utter crap, in essence they are commercials interrupted by some light entertainment. Do not waste your time or money on them, get yourself an indoor antenna and/or streaming service.
- Canadian cellular services are ridiculously expensive. There are several operators, but there is no real competition among them. If you want to save, try one year prepaid for $ 100 (voice and text only).
- No one above mentioned the pension contributions - IMHO that is mandatory - You can contribute up to 18 % or $ 25.370 to your+your spouse pension plans.
- Food/eating out is really expensive here, you can save a lot by shopping wisely and cooking all meals at home.

Which cellular service offers 1 year prepaid for $100? Is there any limit to voice and text? Thanks in advance.

Here they are (they are usually very well hidden, you need to crawl among subscription and pay per month plans to get to them):

http://www.virginmobile.ca/en/plans/details.html#!/prepaid/perminute
https://www.rogers.com/web/content/wireless-products/paygo_topup?asc_icid=prepaid_badge_topup#,Tabset1--2 then click vouchers

Probably other operators also offers same stuff - $ 100 + tax, for 365 days of access to the network, talk+text only, $ 0.40 per minute. If you enter credit card info and enable auto reload, Virgin will give you additional 10 % discount.

Just do not get lock into those "prepaid monthly" plans.

Koodo might be the only difference with his booster data plans.

All leading providers offer prepaid for $10-12 a month.
However, I would personally not recommend them.
Prepaid services in North America work differently to what you are used to in other parts of the world.

Here you are charged per minute basis for incoming calls as well as voicemails.
Also, interestingly the counter starts the second your phone starts ringing.

Usual call charges are 40-50 cents, so If I just ring your phone 10 times and disconnect, you would already lose 5 Dollars.
Not recommended at all. Search for a decent month to month plan instead.

I've done a bit of a travel cost analysis here in my blog. I compare the cost of owning a car when you first arrive and the cost of taking the TTC.
There are some other options such as Car Sharing and Ride sharing. Toronto is really good as well, in downtown they even have some city bicycles you can use for a nominal fee.
