Moving to Montreal Québec from Calgary

Hi I recently arrived in Canada and I want to attend university shortly. I'm young. I speak British English and French very fluently. I'm in Calgary but I feel that Montreal would be better for me. In Calgary while my acent is different from the others, they do understand me and I understand them. However I have been told that the Quebec French sounds very different from that of France and that I might have trouble conversing with them.

Is this true? Advice on moving to Montreal. I felt Montreal might be a good place as I wouldn't forget my French language.

Re: Moving to Montreal Québec from Calgary

Hi,

Can I give you an advice and take it for what it is.

I would move to Toronto.

There are A LOT of bilingual job opportunities in Toronto (unlike Montreal where this is not the advantage) and the salary for the same positions between Toronto and Montreal are literally 50% higher in TO.

I understand you want to go and study, but career wise this is not a wise move. If you don't want to forget your French, find a part time job and go to school. Montreal is nice and all, but is a big waste of time.

Re: Moving to Montreal Québec from Calgary

Calgary has much better job prospects than Quebec in general so a move to Quebec would not be wise unless you plan to be a housewife. This can be easily checked by applying to jobs in Alberta and Quebec - in most instances it generates several interiew calls from Alberta and complete silence from Quebec recruiters.
Quebec people are sceptical about people from outside Quebec. Even if you are French, Belgian, Swiss etc. they will still have difficulty comprehending your accent and demand someone from Sagenay or Gaspesie (whose French we would not understand by the way). This is because it is a relatively closed society which is passionate about preserving their traditions, though others would say it is racism.
I myself live in Quebec but planning to move to Alberta as most of fellow immigrants did because of easier access to jobs. As mrbeachman said, as bilingual you will have advantage in english provinces more than here.
Otherwise Montreal is a marvellous city with beatiful landscapes and diverse leisure activities. What I really like here as well is cheap rent - for 500 CaD you can easily find a 1-bed flat with all bills included close to a metro station (not downtown though). In Calgary this would not even be enough to rent a decent room.
French here is comprehensible, but the more you drive to the north the less you will understand. You will get used though because you will find a system in their accent. For example, the rythm of their speech is uneven (the number of seconds attributed to each syllabus is different) - instead of e-cou-tez they will say e-cou-ou-te-ee-eez.

Re: Moving to Montreal Québec from Calgary

There are an absolute crap ton of French jobs regularly posted in Alberta. I wouldn't be surprised if that's even more than Quebec. Quebec may have some diverse culture (especially in specific parts of Montreal) but it's financial situation almost mirrors the US.. way more consumption and debt than it can handle, but unlike the US where they have a lot of jobs (thanks to that debt), Quebec doesn't even have this and is about to face a massive crunch when it fully comes to grips with it's debt situation.

Re: Moving to Montreal Québec from Calgary

I'm thinking of Montreal for an undergraduate course in a Physical Science and moving later if necessary. I suspect many of the French jobs out of Quebec might be for BA majors and not what I want to do. The rest of Canada is still accessible with a Quebec degree right. I was thinking between McGill unversity or Concordia as I got both and from what I heard they are good universities and better than the others I applied to.
