Hi Everybody,

This is my first post to Canadavisa. you guys have been of great help (reference ) in the past.

I got my PR (did the landing in January 2014 and flew out of canada in feb 2014), got my PR cards by april ( by one of my friend).
I am in process of winding up and moving to Toronto permanently in next 2-3 months. I have following questions :

1) I am entering Canada after more than a year, can it be a problem ( i have the PR card with me )
2) I opened an account in the start right program with Scotia bank in Jan 2014 and maintained nearly 0 amount in the same. Should i transfer my money in the same account before going to Toronto.
3) I did not apply for the health card last time so will i have to wait for 3 months once i apply the same. if yes what health insurance you suggest me to take for this period

Thanks
Gopal

Gopal,

I wish if I have the answers for your all questions. I only know that you can enter and leave canada as much as you want without any issue as long as you have a valid PR.

Lets see Seniors what they will reply.

BTW, how you found canada? and how much do u think the monthly expense for a single person approx. of course!

Thnx

1) entering Canada more than a year is not at all a problem only if you enter in the 4th year of PR. But again it depends on officer to officer.

2) The first money you transfer in Canada bank will get blocked so I recommend not to transfer anything more then $5000. You have to call the bank and inform the purpose of the cash. You can say you are buying car or down payment for house purchase otherwise the money will remain blocked until further notice.
3) I think you can wait 3 month and get OHIP why to waste money on temporary insurance. If you by chance have any emergency just go to the clinic or hospital and pay for that one visit.

If you don't mind can I ask which country you are moving from to Canada and do you have a job here.

blueshirt,

Thank you for your reply. Just to let you know my favorate color is blue :p

Can you elaborate more about the followings:

- Why the 4th year maybe a problem for pr?
- Do you mean if i have 2 DD, the 1st one is not taxable the 2ns is?
- Why the bank will block the money??
- please confirm the following scenario: Im planning to land in 2015, stay for 60 days, leave and come after 1.8 year, complete 3 years, renew the pr, stay for 1yr then can b elligable for citizinship.

Im sorry if I have lot of questions

At HSBC, DD never blocks. Once DD had been deposited in the account, the customer can use the money immediately (even if it is greater than $5000). The customer don't even have to call the bank and inform the purpose of the cash. However, if you bring more than $10,000 in DD, you would have to declare it at the customs. It will not be taxed.

- Why the 4th year maybe a problem for pr?
Answer: to renew PR card you need 2 years of physical presence out of 5 years of PR card validity. So it is pure a violation of intend to reside if you are coming in 4th years meaning you cannot fulfil your PR obligation and will be shifting into another 5 year of PR phase meaning renewal of your existing card.. but as I said there is no ground rule for intend to reside and no one can stop you from entry as you have valid PR but some officers are strict and go with intend to reside and see your intention. by the way officers have lot of power if they want they can stop you and you cannot do or say anything.

- Do you mean if i have 2 DD, the 1st one is not taxable the 2ns is?
Answer: I am not saying taxable or none taxable. none of the DD is taxable its tax free money

- Why the bank will block the money??
Answer: if you first time bring any money inside Canada by bank transfer you need to tell bank purpose of that money otherwise they will suspect it is for wrong cause. once they clear you first time then you are in their white list and can do further transaction as they can track your funds.

- please confirm the following scenario: Im planning to land in 2015, stay for 60 days, leave and come after 1.8 year, complete 3 years, renew the pr, stay for 1yr then can b elligable for citizinship.
Answer: perfect planning I see no issue as you will complete your 2 years stay in Canada on the first PR card without renewal.

I am in mississauga. What profession you are in? If engineer get the P.Eng license your car and home insurance will go down drastically...upgrade yourself here with any course or licensing as i mentioned if you are young but if middle age people come for their kids future and better life. What motivated you to come here as i know in UAE you can still make good tax free earning...

blueshirt, I will not answer for the OP.
Just sharing my perspective.

I knew a neighbor who was driving a shuttle bus. He was US Citizen of Indian descent, he was a partial owner of the shuttle/transporting company.
He saved enough to invest in his own business in UAE. He was excited and told us how he hoped to do well in UAE.
We saw him several months later, driving the same shuttle bus he was driving before. We asked him how it was in UAE.
He told that it was really not as good as he expected. The locals were very unreasonable, even abusive, and he decided it was not worth for him to stay and continue doing business there.
Mind you, he had everything set up there: had a local partner (you can't personally own a business in UAE as a foreigner, you can only partner with a local UAE citizen, whom you basically pay a bribe as his "share" , so you can register and run your entity), found and leased a location, had all the costs to run business covered and so on. It just turned out to be too costly for him (mentally above all) to stay and operate a business there.
I have not heard of a person who had a chance to move out of UAE and didn't.
The only people who do well there are the employees of large Western corporations or those who work for large oil companies in the area as consultants, engineers and so on. They get high compensations, live with their own flock and are well catered to by locals.
Everyone else , whoever ends up there, just looks for an opportunity to get out.
Many Indians go to UAE to gain some experience they can use to immigrate further, to Australia, Canada and so on.
None I know or heard of were too excited to stay there.

really? $4000 for a DAY in intensive care vs. $90 per month per person for Private Insurance Health Plan?
Go figure..Another proof that too much money on hand does not make one a smart cookie! Pay the 90 bucks and have no worries..

Private Health Insurance costs only $90 per month in Canada? $3.33 a day?
That's practically free.

In US you pay $40 per visit co-pay to see specialist, $20 to see your primary care and at least $300 deductible with $5000 per person out of pocket charges per year. And that's if you have a good policy, which costs hundreds of dollars per month, with you paying roughly $110 a month and your employer paying the rest.
