Hi,

We are planning on clearing out the apt from NY to Ontario and had "reserved" a UHaul for a one way move. I had read some reviews online about issues booking so called the NY UHaul who stated that they would be able to let us know a week before in our case approximately location/time of truck. I called today and that is definitely NOT the case since they said that we were the "lowest priority" because it is a one way move and they would let us know 24 hours at BEST but more likely something like the afternoon before.

I'm really worried and stressed because we have to pick up the keys to the new place in the evening and I was hoping to get the truck in the morning and drive over with time to spare (2.5 hr drive). Has anyone else had any experiences with truck rentals and what's best? I heard that only UHaul will let you do the one way across the border. Also, any insight as to if we can cross the border at any time? We will have the goods to follow list that needs to be checked and not sure if that can only be done during 8-4pm hours.

Thanks so much.

Of note: they also could not even give us a ballpark if it would be morning, afternoon or evening. They said technically they could even give us the truck at 5pm...

You can check the border times in the CBSA website. Some borders are open 24/7 while others aren't.

If you don't have a plan B you are in real trouble..
there is high possibilities that they will rent you a truck for your moving
only if there is someone else coming in the same direction from Canada...
in that way they guarantee the return of the truck....
In any case, they are being honest and they are telling you that "If" there is a possibility
you will know within 24 hours....
and also they are honest when they tell you that you are their lowest priority...

You need to get a Plan B as soon as possible....
Otherwise you are going to have your stuff siting in the sidewalk...as the new tenant
will have the right to take possession of your current place....

Just as an update to others: UHaul DOES guarantee you a truck that day, there is no way that you would not have a truck that day it is just a matter of when during that day and how far you have to go to get it. They are the ONLY truck rental company that does international one ways.

Regardless, due to the extremely poor and rude customer service we decided to go with Penske. We had this option because we live close enough to the border (1hr) that we just drove it back to the nearest drop off near the border. Penske was AMAZING and I could not say anything better about them. Great customer service, unlimited mileage, and truck was almost brand new as unlike UHaul they replace their trucks frequently and at every 100 000 miles according to the rep. Definitely go with Penske if it is an option.

Glad to hear your trip went well and was pleasantly uneventful.

Best wishes to you as you embark on the newest chapter in your life! :D
