My boyfriend currently lives in Canada and I live in the United States. He asked me if i wanted to move to Canada to live with him. I wanted to know the steps I need to take just to go live with him. He said I don’t need to work.

Your options are as follows:

- Marry your boyfriend and have him sponsor you for permanent residency. Or if you have lived with him continuously for a full year, he can sponsor you as a common law partner.
- Come to Canada on a study permit to attend school full time in Canada. (This is an expensive option since you need to pay international student fees.)
- Secure a job offer in Canada and come here on a work permit. (Typically very difficult to do.)

Until then, all you can do is visit Canada temporarily. You'll want to make sure it doesn't look like you are moving here (i.e. don't bring all of your stuff) since you could run into issues at the border.

I'm presuming you are a US citizen? You can visit Canada for up to 6 months at a time if you are admissible, have proof he is supporting you, do not intend on working or studying, and satisfy the officer you leave Canada within the allotted time period he gives you.

You also may qualify for other immigration streams without the support of your partner. Depending on your profession and educational background, you may already have a profile for applying for Permanent Residency which will allow you live in Canada indefinitely.
