I need some advice from experienced students already in Canada....

I am going to start at Concordia Univ. this fall and then I might move to another University in January. I am trying to figure out, what problems can I run into while moving from one Univ. to another? Can I easily get out of Concordia after one semester or do they make students sign a contract to stay for a year? Would I need to do anything regarding the study permit when I change the universities?

Please let me know if you have any experience regarding my questions above. I would really appreciate your guidance.

Thanks!

Well I am not an experienced student from Canada yet but I think I can help you so I am posting reply. :D

Yes it is very much possible to change universities once you land in Canada. Lots of students do that because that's an easier way to get admission to better universities.

Since you are going to Concordia initially, so that means you have CAQ. Upon leaving the province (if so), then I think you will have to talk with the immigration authority to surrender your CAQ permit; other then that, I don't think there will be any problem. At max, you will have to talk with the CHC over there regarding your change.

And no university makes you sign contract for staying or anything other than scholarships. If you have a supervisor, you will need to contact with him at once since he/she might have research plans with you and thus can be a problem if you leave. So you will have to tell him about your plan beforehand. Otherwise, just get to know the procedure for dropping out from the university.

Hope it helps.

About the 2nd question, I did not get your request. Can you please clarify me your question?

1. Study permits are only valid for the duration of your studies-If you have study permit valid for 2 yrs and you enrol for a 4 yr course(You will be in canada illegally)

2.If you brush shoulders with the all powerful police officers, the first qstn is through which university did you land here?(The assumption is you are not sincere) and many more problems that you might find there.

BE very careful you dont waste what you have struggled for.

In the event of anything dont forget to mention strong reasons that made you leave your original college to another one ok.

Just humble yourself.

Study permit can always be extended as long as you have valid documents for that and legit financial support for all the purposes (living+tuition).

You should also be aware that when you switch universities, the new university may not give you credit for all of the courses you completed at the first university.

Guys, THANKS for all your replies!

@rhasan: I was thinking exactly what you said. I did my bachelors from US and there was no contract or anything. Students could leave any time. So I thought it should be same in Canada. I just wanted to check just like that. Thanks for sharing your thoughts!!!

@scylla: Thanks for that info! I am actually going to start over in January, so I won't be looking to transfer any credits. I just don't want Concordia to hasle me for any reason when I leave after a semester.

@grape wine: I think I kind of unerstand your 2nd question. If you got your visa for a univ in Quebec but you also have admission letter from a univ in Ontario and you want to enter through ontario because you want to go to that univ, I think that should be ok as long as you got into similar programs in both universities. You can say that you got your 2nd offer letter after you got the visa and since that's a better univ, you want to choose that.

By the way, any idea about getting personal insurance so you don't have to get the insurance from the univ. Since I am planning to move after a semester, it will be beneficial for me to get my own insurance.

Great news! Sometimes the transfer credits catch people off guard and they don't know in advance that they will very likely lose credits when they switch universities. Again, great to hear this isn't a concern for you. Makes things much simpler.

I don't see why Concordia would harass you. As long as you have paid your fees for all of the courses you have taken, you'll be fine. If you don't pay for future courses, then that's your decision. People drop out of university and change schools all of the time. So what you plan to do is in no way unusual. The only "universities" that penalize students for leaving and charge them for courses they haven't taken are places like the University of Phoenix in the US. And I would stay far away from places like that for many reasons (reputation, educational experience, cost, teaching experience, etc.).
