Yes you have to wait up to 3 months to get your health card you must be living in some other province other than Quebec or Ontario . The condition applies to new immigrants of Ontario and Quebec . I'm planning to visit my home country some time next year.

Im in Edmonton-Alberta, i got the health card after 10 days, lucky me then.

You don't have access to Canadian health care for 3 months from my understanding, regardless of getting the card (which you shouldn't have gotten anyway).

There is no "Canadian" health care as every province has their own rules. This poster is in AB which has first day health care for newcomers. That means you are covered in AB from the first day you land as a PR or temporary worker even though it might take 10 days to get a health card.

As far as I know, only 3 provinces still hold tight to the 3 month waiting period and those are ON, BC and Quebec.

That's interesting, never knew that. IMO every province should hold tight to the 3 month rule.

Why? I don't see why they shouldn't cover you right away if they can do it in 3 months. It's not like you have paid so much taxes in the 3 months that you will have paid for your coverage, especially not newcomers that don't have a job yet.

In these provinces, it is a problem that people do not have health care and can not get medical care or end up in debt. Ontario has free clinics and Quebec has certain exceptions from the waiting period so I gather they have realized that it is a problem.

IMO a new immigrant should not have access to free health care right away. Wrong or right it's what I think :P. Mostly I want them to contribute something to Canada before hooray free health care, profit! And of course, 3 months of taxes is nowhere near enough to cover whatever you're going to be going into the hospital for (Well, unless you get some amazing job right away which is possible), but at least it's something. Just makes me angry that I'm paying taxes for someone to arrive to Canada, and on day 1 have access to that and use it up.

:)

The idea of universal health care is that we are all covered, rich or poor, in the same system regardless of how much we pay in taxes.
