Hi all,

Can anyone confirm that being a self-employed mortgage agent (I have a few years experience in Canada) qualify as a skilled worker, for application for Permanent Residency?

I think it does since I think it falls under NOC code 1114 Other Financial Officers, but I just wanted to see if anyone can confirm this. Has anyone applied for PR as a mortgage agent before (or real estate agent) and were you successful?

Thanks for any help!

Sincerely,
A random girl from China :)

Yes - this occupation qualifies. It can sometimes be more difficult to prove self employed work experience. I would recommend you read through the Express Entry section of the forum to see how others have done it. The key with Express Entry is how many points you have. More than 450 and you're probably good. Less than 450 and it's difficult to say if and when you will be selected. Note that without an approved LMIA, you cannot say you have a job offer in Canada.

How sure are you that self employed person qualifies? On CIC website, they define self employed as farmers. Other than that, u need a previous experience with a T4 pay slip.

Thanks scylla! I will read through the Express Entry section as you suggest.

You say that "without an approved LMIA, you cannot say you have a job offer in Canada". But are suggesting I need a job offer? I am already self-employed as a mortgage broker, is that not possibly enough?

Allallall - I am pretty sure a self employed person qualifies, at least for a mortgage broker. The guidance in NOC 1114 states this.

No - you don't need a job offer to apply. But you need to have enough points to be selected. As of now, no one with less than 450 points has been selected under Express Entry / Federal Skilled Worker. A job offer supported by an LMIA gives you 600 additional points and guarantees selection.

While the information you have posted is certainly accurate - your resulting conclusions are incorrect. The Self Employment immigration program is geared towards individuals who are self employed in very specific fields (and mortgage broker isn't one of those fields).

You can count self employment as work experience under Express Entry - Federal Skilled Worker (however you cannot count self employment as experience towards Canadian Experience Class).

So the oroginal answer still stands, you can apply for PR under Express Entry - Federal Skilled Worker. There are plenty of people in the Express Entry section of the forum who have done just that. However self employment does tend to be more difficult to document / prove.

Self employment only counts of it is outside canada. It doesn't count inside canada. You will get ZERO work experience for that. I did it myself. I asked a consultant. I know what i am talking about lol.

Make an express entry profile and if they give you points for your work experience after you have checked the self employed box, i will give you whatever you want.
