Hi there,

when applying as common-law (my boyfriend will be sponsoring me, I do not bring any dependants with me to Canada and I do not have any children on my own)- is there a minimum income requirement?

There is no income requirement but, the sponsor must submit an option C or some proof of the previous years income, no income requirement just means they will not deny the sponsorship on grounds of low income, they still want to know how the sponsor plans to support his/her spouse.

Does anyone know if it's crucial to submit an explanation with the application as to how my husband and I plan on supporting ourselves if I have a low income? I am currently a uni student so I'm only working part-time

It is important yes. CIC will consider your partner's income abilities as well - they just want to make sure you won't need social assistance.

Aha, thank you. And yes, he is actually currently employed full-time as a Manager and we have a letter from his employer stating his income/position etc

I've seen cases in which the sponsor has no income (e.g., a stay-at-home partner) and it is the applicant with the income and CIC has approved the application. They are very flexible on spouse/partner applications.

Thanks so much for the input; this relieved me!

I'm a stay at home mom right now and I was approved. We did have a letter from my dad saying that we could stay with him once we are in Canada and that if we were unable to find work in our chosen fields he has a family business that we could work for

AS long as you have a plan for how you will survive as a family once your partner gets to Canada, then you should be fine. Just explain what your plans are ( staying with family, getting a temporary job, the savings you may have, the skills your partner may be able to transfer to Canada, etc...), and if CIC still has doubts, they will ask you - they won't refuse your sponsorship right away, they will ask you for more details if needed.
My partner was approved to sponsor me, and he has been a student for the past 3 years, with a student loan to pay back, and he has only worked 5 months (summer months) in the last 3 years. the approval was not an issue.
