Migrating from Australia

Hi all,

I found this forum while searching for information on how to migrate to Canada. I'm an Australian and my spouse is a Singaporean currently living in Melbourne, Australia. I am entitled to Working Holiday Visa(WHV) and my spouse is slightly older than me and is unable to obtain the WHV. However, after further research, I've found her job is critical occupation list. She works for advertising agency under "1122 Professional Occupations in Business Services to Management". This I believe, entitle her for entry to Canada without a pre-arranged job. I am senior security engineer(IT/networks) and is under the skilled migration list but not on the critical state which requires a pre-arranged job.

Now, my questions are:
- Can I enter canada under working holiday visa and later transfer to permanent residency visa under the "Canadian experience class"? This allows me to work in Canada for 24 months and also gain experience with the Canadian culture.
- As my spouse is not entitle for the WHV, can she apply permanent residency while she's with me on tourist visa which I believe is 6 months.
- Are there any other ways we could gain entry to Canada?
- Can I apply for WHV but my spouse put me as dependent on her application?
- How's the IT job market in Toronto?

HI,

Why are you taking the long route to get to Canada, as you said your spouse peoffesion is listed in the new FSW list then why dont you apply for permanent resident straightaway from Australia rather then going to Canada on some other visa and then apply for it. I dont know much about other visa but if your move to Canada on working holidays or some other visa and then apply for PR in the meantime if you working holidays visa is expired you will have to leave the country. So isnt better to apply for FSW from Australia and it will take around 8 months to get it all done.

I think that we should be thankful that applications take only 8 months knowing the uncertainty when applying to another countries...

Thanks for your prompt response. I think what you said is true. What is exact procedure to apply? Do we need to sit the IELTS tests first.

Only primary applicant is required to Provide Ilets test.

I dont know if anyone in this forum can answer my question. I did the pre-assessment test. If I apply for working holiday visa first and then proceed with applying for PR, it goes under Canadian experience class instead of FSW. Why is that?

I am below 31 years old and I could apply for working holiday visa which is easier. But not sure if employer in Canada would hire anyone on permanent when I'm on temp 24 months visa.

You can start out on a WHV, find an employer and start working. Your wife can apply for the PR for both of you at the same time under FSW. While you are on your WHV, she can visit you for up to 6 months at a time.

If the PR under FSW doesn't work out for some reason, you can try to get your employer to apply for a regular work permit for you instead of your WHV. If it works out and your occupation is skilled, you would have the right to bring your wife over and get an open work permit for her. She could also visit you while you are on your WHV, look for a job and try to get a work permit on her own. Then either one of you could apply for PR for you both under a provincial nominee program with employer support or after 2 years under CEC.

That was along the line of what I was thinking. At least I have more options. Is the CEC easier to obtain than the FSW?

You need to work for 2 years in a skilled occupation to qualify for CEC but once you do that, it's fairly fast and problem free to apply. FSW has a points system and more requirements to qualify but hands down, if you can apply for FSW now through your wife rather than wait 2 years to apply through CEC, you should apply for FSW. You would have your PR before you even qualify to apply under CEC.
