My cousin is a millwright and he loves it.. he is trying to get my spouse to go into it as well, haha. We will see what happens!

Yeah Luis looked at Millwright.. but said he doesn't like reading blue prints.. haha The local college here also offers a Power Enginerring Co-Op so that may be an option too. No matter what he choses it will be a complete career change, but trades people get paid very well, so I think it's worth the career change. :)

I don't believe you have to declare it. They just want to know you have less than $10,000.. :) You can open a US bank acct in Canada.. but I don't think you can wire it right in to your US acct, without it getting converted. Maybe ask the bank? I would probably get Travellers Cks from your US bank for the balance, and bring them to Canada and deposit in to your US account, and transfer when the exchange is more favourable. And travellers cks are usually free from your bank, if not should only be a small fee.
The complication is that my US bank does not exist in NY. It is a California bank. So I might transfer it to my ING direct bank because they have partnerships with other banks. So maybe I will do that and get a travelers cheque. I have never ever had a travelers cheque before. But I can just take the cash? It is less than $10,000. I do have a US bank account with Royal Bank and will definitely wait until the exchange rate is good!

Some people prefer the security of travellers cks, but yeah you can take cash with you.

Yeah for sure! I dont know if my spouse would like the blueprint part of it either :P I think its one for the better too! Trades people get paid really well and there is a lot of governmnet funding which makes the career very attractive :)

canadiangirl78, I've heard some people mention online brokers like xe.com give much better rates than banks. You might want to take a look and see if it's worth using them. If you're bringing less than $10,000 you don't need to declare. At least this is what the border declaration card says.

Just sent a case specific enquiry, lets hope they respond, as it has gone passed the regular processing time now. Have any of you received quick responses from them from enquiries you have sent?

Have you considered depositing a check from your US bank (regular check from your US checking account made out to yourself) into your USD account in Canada? If you don't need the funds immediately, it will save you the fees from wires or travelers cheques, etc. and the pain of signing individual travelers cheques.

I had no idea you could do this. Hopefully I can find some checks for our US bank! Gracias!

I hope next week is a lot busier than this one.. because the embassy has been super quiet this week. Have a good weekend everyone!
