Meet basic residence but not the physical presence - travel a lot for work

Hi all,

I meet the basic residence but not the physical presence because I travel a lot for work. I immigrated to Canada in November 2011 and have traveled for work for at least 6 months. I've also traveled for vacations for around 2 months. I will be traveling this year a lot for work so if the new law comes into effect in July 2015 then I would have to wait much more time to apply for the Canadian citizenship.

I would like your advise: would you apply for the Canadian citizenship before July 2015?

The consensus is that it really wouldn't be worth the time, effort and expense to apply without having 1,095 days of physical presence. When I read your post, I almost thought you were talking about me as well...

I am a security consultant for one of the top IT consulting firms in the world. Naturally, A lot of travel is associated with being a consultant and working for such a company. All I can say is I have been able to successfully dodge international assignments for 3 years !!! just to be able to accumulate my 1095 days of physical presence. And as soon as I completed 1095+ days of physical presence, I applied for citizenship right away, but by then, there was no way on earth that I could dodge anymore international assignments that came my way (at least not without losing my job). And frankly, I don't have a reason to dodge international assignments anymore, I've completed my 1095+ days of physical presence and provided all the documentation necessary to apply for citizenship. Now, if Mr. Chris Alexander still thinks that citizenship applicants need to stick around until they get their citizenship (which is how he explained the "Intent to reside" rule in one of the senate committee meetings https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uMoa1vbxRWk), i'll be more than happy to quit my job if Chris Alexander can pay my bills while we wait for my citizenship.

In your case, you submitted the application before the new rule of 4/6 year and the "intent to reside" clause for the duration of the citizenship application process. So no worries on your part.
