My husband's medical, police check AND his passport all expired while our case was still being processed.
When they are ready to go forward again they will ask you for renewed documents. It also saves you from having to keep paying every time to keep them current while they are still processing, and then expiring, renewing, expiring repetitively. They'll just ask for current ones at the end when they need them again.
