Hello, everybody. My wife and I are getting her application ready to submit for her permanent residency. She is a U.S. citizen, I am Canadian, and our daughter is U.S. by birth but has her Canadian certificate of citizenship.

Had a few quick questions about the medical exam:

1. This should be done before sending the application, correct?
2. Has anyone done this in the States (New York state, more specifically) and could you tell me how you went about getting it done?
3. What are the photos mentioned that are required with the exam? Are they done seperately? Do we have to do them or does the doctor's office do them?

Thanks for the help. I know the medical exam is not a huge deal, but I want to make sure we do everything right so we don't waste time.

Also, how're the times looking for U.S. spousal processing these days? We are hoping to move next year before Sept (so our daughter can start school in Canada).

Thanks, everybody!

1. yes. it's best to submit upfront, to avoid delays in approval
2.you will need to find the panel physician list in the applicant guide or country specific instructions to find the closest doctor to you. most states have at least one, and depending on your city, there can be more. the price can vary per doctor. in CT, it cost $350 for the exam and blood work, and $50 for the chest xray. the panel physician list will have the contact information. you call them up and ask for an appointment. it's pretty simple, and there was no wait for scheduling with the doctor i went to. when you make the appointment, confirm what is needed. you will want to confirm they use and are familiar with the "emedical" system. For an upfront medical, you will not need to bring any forms, so if that is suggested by the doctor, then they most likely are not up to date with the system. the doctor's office is suppose to print a receipt out called "emedical" for the applicant. it will have a barcode for cic to use, and the results will be electronically sent to cic as well.
3.they may require you to bring passport pictures or they may take the pictures at the office. every office is different, so you will need to ask them.
4. current us applicants are getting approved in 3-6 months. there's no knowing how long this trend will continue.

Thanks for the info. You mentioned the doctor's office submitting the results of the medical electronically to the CIC. Where would this information go if the first step in the PR process is getting this medical exam? In other words, if I haven't sent in any paperwork, how does CIC know what this is for when the exam results are submitted? Or are we supposed to do something to open up a PR case for my wife prior to the medical?

Thanks so much for your help!

the medical results will have the applicant's name, passport number and picture. the doctor will enter the info into the system and the receipt will have a barcode which cic will use to confirm the results. her results will be connected to her application when the application is received.

So my wife won't need any CIC reference number to give the doctor at the medical?

Thanks for your help in this matter.

no, she will not need to give a reference number. if they ask for an application number, tell them it's an upfront medical, and there is no # available since it is being submitted with the application.

Hey! Sorry to bother you one last time. So, my wife can schedulke a medical appointment without starting any paperwork or opening any CIC case number? In other words, this would be the very first step, and the doctor's office would know what to do with the results?

Sorry to be such a pain, but we're on the cusp of making an appointment and I want to be sure we're doing everything in the right order.

You've been so helpful. Thanks so much!

Yes the physician would know what to do with the results. In Canada they use a system called e-Medical to submit the results.

You do not need to do notify the CIC or open a case number with the CIC prior to having the medical. Just make sure they know it is an immigration, spousal upfront medical.

Good luck!
