Medical Exam Question

Hi all,

I have been searching through the forum and I haven't been able to find a clear answer. I was wondering, do I need to have the medical exam done before I submit my documents?

Yes you do. Have you read through the Immigration Guide and Country Specific Documents? Everything you need to know is in there as to how to go about your medical exam.

"The DMP will give you Copy 2 of the Medical Report: IMM 1017 EFC - Medical Report Section A.
Include the original of Copy 2 with your application. (Photocopies will not be accepted.)" -straight from the guide. Here is the link.

I was reading the country specifics for the medical and am planning to get one this week. Online under the DMP section it states that:

Fill out Appendix C and bring it and the following items if applicable for you and each of your family members to your medical appointment:

•Appendix C
•Passport and photocopies of the biographical data pages (this is the page that shows the date of birth, the country of origin, etc.)
•If no passport is available, provide an official identity document bearing a photo and the date of birth of the family member
•Eye glasses or contact lenses
•Previous medical reports, prescriptions or treatments
•5 recent photos, taken within six months preceding the date of your examination
•Immigration client identification number (ID #), if known

But the Appendix C says just to fill out that form and bring it with you. I'm planning on bringing my contact lens and passport. Is that all i need or should I bring what's on this list? I'm confused.

it's always better to do medical in advance, sometimes the absence of medicals can be a reason of your application being returned by Mississauga.

Appendix C doesn't say you only need to bring in the form. What it says is: "For complete instructions about your medical examination and how to find a Designated Medical
Practitioner (DMP), read the Medical Instructions section in IMM 3999, Part 2: The Immigrant's Guide". And that's what you've quoted above.

You definitely need to bring a filled out appendix C in addition to your ID (with a photocopy) and 5 photos. You would need previous medical reports only if that's applicable to you, for instance if you have some sort of a medical condition that's being followed, like a heart condition. If you've only ever had routine physicals, you don't need to bring any medical reports since you likely won't have any!

You will need to submit photos (four, I think, at the DMP and 1 at the place where you get your chest xray OR maybe it was 3 here and 2 there), prove your identity (passport) with copies (the dr's office I went to would not make copies for clients), and the form. I took my medical records, but the doctor did not look at them.

Oh, and plan for a long wait. I had a 10am appointment...apparently so did 40 other people. The wait was about 4 hours for a 10 minute office visit.

Yikes!! ??? I think the wait would probably depend on where you get your medical done and how busy they are. We were in and out in about half an hour.

Thanks everyone! You're all so helpful. I called back and asked what I needed to bring and reading your replies really helped too. Hopefully I won't have a long wait. it's scheduled this Sat morning in a downtown office in Vancouver.

Also I have another question. It says from the medical instructions that: "You and each of your family members accompanying you or not and who are not already citizens or
permanent residents of Canada must complete your own copy of the form located in Appendix C".

Does this mean family members who are not accompanying me need a medical check or do they just fill out the form?

They are required to undergo a medical exam as well. Family members in this case include any children and your spouse if he/she is not in Canada. Parents and siblings and the like are not included in this.

Thanks Nyssa. I don't have children but I thought my parents would have to get one even though they are not coming.

Also, do I need Section A from IMM1017 if applying outside of Canada (sending app to mississauga?) Just confused cause it mentions it in the guide.

Your parents do not need a medical as you can't include them in this application. If you want to sponsor your parents once you attain PR status, then they would need to get a medical done.

Yes, you must include Section A of IMM1017 with your application -- that is the proof that you have done your medical. The DMP doctor will give you a copy of this and you need to submit it with your application.

only you and dependents are required to have medicals done. in your case where there's no dependents, so it means just you. parents require medicals only when their process has started after Mississauga approves their sponsorship - but that is totally different process that can only be done after you obtain your PR status.
