Dear all,

We are in a slightly sticky situation. We got our medical done before we realized that it would set the date we had to arrive in Canada by. Our medical expiration date is August 29th and as a teacher in Germany I only finish school on July 25th. We were hoping to do some traveling around Asia after that before moving to Canada, however this would give us less than a month to really enjoy being abroad before we'd have to move home. We heard that it is possible to get an extension on your medical without having to re-do it or having your COPR expire. However, is it possible to do this for personal reasons, or only if it will expire whilst the application is still in process? We do not yet have our COPR (we only applied to the London office in November), if that is an issue.

We realize that there are people in much more dire straits, but if anyone has an idea about how to deal with this we would be very grateful.

Thanks!

The VO can ask the CIC Health branch for an extension of your medical, but only if it is the only thing keeping them from issuing your COPR. Not all VOs do that, in fact my VO never extends, they ask for re-med.

Bottom line, it is out of your hands. You can't really do anything to extend the expiry date of your COPR, unless it arrives to you already expired (there have been cases here where COPR arrived in the mail a few days after the expiry date on it).

If they give you one month to land, there is nothing you can do. Some people actually had only 10 days time to land in Canada.

I can only see 2 outcomes:
1. The VO finishes processing your application before your med exam expires - resulting in your COPR being valid till August.
2. The VO doesn't finish processing your application before your med exam expires - resulting in a request for a new medical exam which will be valid for another year.

Thank you for answering. It's a shame - but there are a lot worse issues to be dealing with.

if they don't extend your medicals, i'm sure there are panel doctors where you are traveling. It might be a good backup to take that list with you if you find to be in a tough spot when traveling. just a thought...

I appreciate the idea, but we've decided that it we want to travel for over a month, we'll go to Canada first (with PR, fingers-crossed) and go through the landing interview etc, then travel from Canada.

If that's our plan, does anyone know if we have to stay in Canada for a certain time before my partner leaves? We'd like to stay about a week, and then head out, but not if it all jeopardizes the process.

i don't believe there is any issue with traveling after receiving PR. If you are traveling for an extended period of time, as long as both of you are together, it counts toward PR obligations. If you, as a sponsor, is a PR yourself, i'm not sure if that rule also applies.

Hopefully senior members will be able to tell you for sure if there is a period of time where the PR needs to remain in canada upon landing. From what i've been reading on these boards, there doesn't seem to be any.

Thanks for the help!

I am a Canadian citizen, so hopefully there will be no issue on that end.

There is no issue to just do a 'fly by' to land and then be off on your trip. The only hindrance might be in providing a Canadian address to get his PR card sorted and sent. If you can't provide one immediately, you will have to provide one at a later date.

Thanks for letting me know! That's exactly what I wanted to hear. We do have an address for them to send it to, so there should hopefully be no issue.
