[flash=200,200][/flash]Dear all

Greetings;

Please help me in this. two months ago i got acceptance from University of Alberta for PhD in civil engineering, I have started the visa process and just got it. However, today I have recieved acceptance from Mcgill for the same program. I am so confused which one to go with, as I have got my Visa for Uni of Alberta and everything is okay. Whats confused me is when I asked many collegues and all said Mcgill world rank is 24 and Alberta is 94 so most of them are saying Mcgill. Please I posted this post here because you might been in the same place i am here today, If you in my case which one to choose and why taking in consideration that I already got student visa for alberta. Waiting your precious advice.

I am not 100% sure about this but I believe in order to study in Quebec you'll need a CAQ so make sure you are eligible for that after applying for a visa without it.
Also if you plan to live in Quebec after graduation, you need to know that speaking French (at least an intermediate level) will be required. Competition can be stiff.
Of course the reputation of Mcgill is better. But you also need to choose a university you can afford

Post-secondary student

You may change your school, program, field of study or level of study (e.g. from the Bachelor level to the Masters level) without applying for a new study permit. You do not need to apply for a change to the condition of your study permit, either. You may continue to use your study permit as long as it is valid.

Thanks all for you helpful info amd advice. I need to make a decsion in one month from now, Mcgill is better for sure but the staff in alberta provided termindous help for me and the supervisor in Alberta helped me a lot. I am very shy to say no to them after accepting the offer and taking my visa. Is it okay to go with Mcgill and start the application agian and withdrow from Alberta as I did not register yet Or go with alberta

I am very stressed and confussed, I really need your help to make a decision.

People turn down PhD offers all the time. It's not considered rude.
I think you should be fine with the study permit you have. Does it mention a specific school? You might want to confirm that with your consulate though.

I am going to the U of A so I know how you feel! The advisors were super helpful in answering all my questions and I always felt "welcomed". I also got accepted into McGill but I did not accept the offer because I just never felt welcomed there. My emails were never answered and I felt like just a number. But then again I am an undergraduate student and so reputation does not matter to me. You're a PhD student and so reputation plays a big role. You should go for McGill if that's what you really want! It's a superb institution.
Oh and don't worry about turning down your offer at the U of A, I'm sure you're not the first to do that

Thanks FMJeb a lot. We have the same case here. Infact, they are so helpful at Alberta the supervior is in contact with my daily and asking if i need further help. Considering your advice, I need to go with Mcgill, so do you prefer that I wait till I recieve confirmation about how my study will be funded in Mcgill. and about the study permit does it take so much time to change the school. Another point is can i change the school after arivall in canada

I think you don't need to change the study permit. That's what I'm getting at.

As for the choice, it's your area.

Yes definitely wait before turning down your U of A offer. When you receive more information on the funding at Mcgill then you should turn that one down.
Also no you don't need to apply for another student permit. All you need to do it login to your myCIC account and then go down and you'll see an option for "Change designated learning institution" and it will require more information about Mcgill. However check if you need the CAQ, which is required for any foreign student studying in Quebec https://www.immigration-quebec.gouv.qc.ca/en/electronic-services/caq-electronic/new-application.html

Perhaps call the university (I think it was called service point) and ask if you need the CAQ after already receiving your visa

No doubt McGill, no 2nd choice. Hurry up for the CAQ. Its easy to get the CAQ, as I have heard and after getting it the VO must issue u a study permit. Since the federal govt has provision to have autonomy to the Quebec govt anyone gets CAQ can't be barred from getting study permit. My brother also got easily in his time. All the best!
