Hi
I sponsored my friend with his family on Manitoba PNP. He landed few months ago and was unsuccessful so far in finding a job. Is he eligible to apply for a welfare (financial) assistane? If Yes, does that have any negative impact on me as a sponser?!

Thanks in advance for your input.

Yes, any social assistance the sponsored person receives, the sponsor has to pay back to the government.

Anton1990, it's not true that the sponsor has to pay back to the government. Please research properly before you give out false information. No one pays back to governmentfor assistance offered to a permanent resident or citizen.
Monaco, yes it will impact negatively on you as the sponsor if you plan to sponsor other people in the future. As sponsor, you are required to do all you can to make sure that the new immigrant succeeds. That said, you should encourage your friend to take up any legitimate job as long as it fetches something to get by until he lands the big job. Most organisation want someone with Canadian job experience even if volunteer jobs. Please, do all you can to help him settle down .

I agree sometimes a little knowledge is a dangerous thing.

Manitoba PNP is not a sponsorship program so you will not pay back if the individual you supported gets on welfare.

However, it may affect other/future applications to MPNP that you support and it may lead to the refusal of those applications because you did not successfully settle the previous applicant without relying on "welfare" as you agreed to in settlement plan part 2.

I would suggest you advise the individual to take any survival job available until he can get the desired job. It is better than getting on welfare.
