It's very expensive and I'm questioning if I actually need one.

If you’re confident, you can do it by yourself. I did not hire one as It’s a huge cost and in addition to that there won’t be any accountability from consultant’s end. You’ll have to stay active and pay attention on it. So, I decided not to proceed with agent. All the stepwise videos I have followed from YouTube.

Most of the documents you need to prepare, so by that time you have all documents ready, it doesn't make sense to hire someone to do the rest(basically uploading onto the portal), unless you have any unique condition that might not be typical for immigration purposes. You can do it by yourself.
