Hi there,

I am reading mixed information on this topic so I wonder if there have been some changes in recent years and I thought I ask again. I am a TFW with a valid work permit and I am pregnant. Will I be eligible for maternity and parental benefits if I have worked the 600 hours and paid into EI? Thanks!

First of all, you have to check your eligibility for a Government Health Coverage in the province/territory you reside in. If you are eligible, then the costs for delivery, pre-natal care, medical emergencies, etc. will be covered by this insurance.

In case you are eligible to receive provincial health benefits in Ontario, British Columbia, Quebec or New Brunswick, there will be a waiting period of approximately 90 days before your insurance coverage begins.

For these 3 months, you can get a private health insurance policy that, along with the coverage of standard medical emergencies i.e. hospitalization, accidental dental repair, etc., you will receive additional coverage for pregnancy related complications including abdominal pain, miscarriage, premature birth, bleedings.

Pregnancy complications insurance is designed for Visitors to Canada (including TFW) only valid up to the 31st week of your pregnancy period. Unfortunately, it does not cover delivery or prenatal care.

If you are not eligible to receive insurance coverage under the provincial/territorial healthcare plan, you can also opt for pregnancy complications coverage, just to get some financial protection in case something goes wrong.

Tfw are not eligible for parental and maternity benefits. You should be permanent resident,or Canadian citizen.you might be eligible for child tax benefits, UCCB...if you have been living in Canada more than 18 months.
