Hello everyone,

I was wondering if I need a new study permit to do master's in Canada. I just graduated from a Canadian university with a degree in international studies and I am applying for a post graduation work permit. I also want to do my master's. Do I need a study permit or can I just go to school with a PGWP.

Thank You

If you're aiming for PR. Go to PGWP , Undergraduate students get more points and preference when it comes to PR.

You need to pick one or the other. You can't do a Masters or Post Graduate Permit on a PGWP. You would need to obtain a new study permit.

In that case, could I just apply for another study permit for my master's?

Yes - but to the best of my knowledge that invalidates your PGWP.

Thank you for your help guys but I am extremely confused. You are basically telling me that I cannot purse higher education after acquiring both my high school and undergrad degrees in Canada while also working under Post Graduation Work Permit. I mainly can't understand how doing master's can invalidate my work permit that I got for my undergrad.

Since the PGWP is a one-time deal, international students typically hold off applying for this work permit until they have completed all of their studies in Canada. They typically complete their Bachelor degree and then move on immediately to a Masters - then apply for the PGWP once the Masters is completed.

Thank you and one last question if you don't mind. I just checked the cic website and it says that master's graduates also get a three year PGWP. So, if I apply for a PGWP and it gets invalidated when I apply for master's. Would I get it again after my master's is completed?

On the PGWP it will be clearly stated that you cannot get involve in any education (length more than 6 months). So you can only choose one: extend your SP to go for the Master or apply for PGWP (issued only once during your lifetime)

LOL WHAT? Please explain!

I was under the impression that a master's degree gets you more points under express entry

You're right of course. Earlier poster is wrong. Obviously more points for Masters since it's a higher level of education.

You obviously get more points from masters but undergraduate students do have a higher chance of getting a job than a masters student. I know a bunch of guys who finished masters here at UofT but didn't get a job. On the other hand, The undergrad students were getting multiple job offers. Canadian employers consider bachelor degrees outside Canada to be non viable and try their best to hire employees wive graduated with Bachelors from a Canadian university.

One of reason is that, You have a higher chance of getting a Peng with an undergraduate from Canada rather than postgraduate. Look at the statistics. Employers look for Peng candidates because they've been certified by the provincial board.

Try your best to take a few undergraduate courses or TA most undergraduate courses in order woo employers during interview.
