Do you have to wait for the original Certificate, or can you send in the one that you get for the marriage and send in the certificate once it arrives?

Thanks for your replies.

I think you can wait. The visa office will sent you a letter for any missing information later.

Okay but that was a copy of the certificate that you had to wait for? right? which can take up to 9 weeks to get? My question is the one that you receive at City Hall, can that be sent in as proof until the marriage certificate arrives?

you can't use the marriage registration, it must be the certificate... if what you get on the day of the wedding is a registration, it's not what they want and you must wait for the certificate to send that (copy or original)

check the country specific checklist to see if they require a copy or the original (i don't think they ever refuse originals... if they don't require originals it will specifically say COPY on the line item of the document... . if it says original on the line item, you must send the original.. if it doesn't specifiy (even if it says send copies up at the top), you may be requested to send originals if you send a copy... it's confusing!)

Planning on getting married in Canada. So I wont be able to send whatever you sign on the day then. We will have to wait for the original then to come in the mail.

I married on April the 3rd of this year. I got on the website (Ontario) and requested the certificate on the 9th and got it on the 20th. It doesn't usually take as long as they say it will. :)

Oh okay thanks. Our situation is a bit complicated so to wait 9 weeks would be such a hassle for me.

I know that some people will send the paper that you get at City Hall and the real certificate later, but it isn't ideal.

i think how successful that would be would depend on the examining officer... some may let it go on to the next stage where the certificate would be requested, others who do their job a little more strictly and by the book would decline the sponsor portion (first part) and send back the application due to missing documentation... (which isn't all that serious, you just need to correct the error and re-submit)... just be advised, they request certificates not registration forms...

i personally think it's better to have all the ducks in a row from the beginning, gives them less to nit-pick over the application... if they find one thing in error they may examine everything else more closely... that's just my thoughts tho :)

Thank you for your replies.

It is probably better to submit properly and accurately the first time. Just hope we wont have to wait too long for it to arrive.
