Hello,

I just received my proof of marriage which I had ordered. I was expecting to see a Marriage Certificate. However, what I got from office of registrar general is labeled "Marriage License". Is this correct? Can I use this as proof of marriage. My understanding was that the license was just something you need to show to the official who performs the marriage (what we got from City Hall before the marriage). However on this form it does say where the marriage took place, witness and official present. So is this sufficient? I guess I'm confused why this is labeled a Marriage License when the document checklist says I should provide a Marriage Certificate.

Thanks!

Amit

I think what you've got now is enough, because it shows where the marriage took place, witnesses, etc, which means the marriage happened already.

does it say marriage license "or certificate"? that's what is on mine. I believe as long as it's a legitmate legal document and has identifying information for you, your spouse, the officiant and a date it was recorded in your town, you are fine. The marriage license we get before the wedding isn't signed by an officiant until after the ceremony, and won't be notarized by the town. I believe those items are what are looked for in certificate.

It says License but all the information of the marriage is there including name of Clergy so I think you guys are right, it should be acceptable.

edit: Just called Service Ontario up, they said that what they sent me is the long form. I guess the short form says Marriage Certificate. But they confirmed that it is proof of marriage and should suffice.

My marriage certificate also says marriage licence . It had my signature and my husband signature on it and who married us , where, date etc.

Marriage Licence is different from certificate, before the wedding, bride and groom goes to registry to obtain marriage licence and registration of marriage form. These two will be given to the marriage registered officiant and after the marriage i.e joining of couples, the officiant will retain the licence for his/her record and send the registration of marriage form that contains name and signature of two witnesses and couples name and signature to vital statistics immediately after the wedding. then after few weeks couple can then go back to registry to obtain marriage certificate because vital statistics would have update it in their system.

They are already married .. The licence says ( marriage licence application) when he request a marriage certificate it comes back as a marriage licence.

oh okay, i did explain because am getting married next month and i just got the marriage licence and registration of marriage from the registry and the what i explained earlier was what the registry agent told us and i also read it online on alberta registry under marriage licence section

There are two types of marriage certificates that you can order. One is the short form ("file size") - it's good for framing, has a nice shiny gold sticker on it and is notarized. It just has the date, names and place of marriage. Mine is hanging on my fridge. The other is the long form certificate - this will be a certified copy of your marriage license that's been signed and sealed by the Registrar General. I ordered both and sent copies of both with my application because I had read somewhere that even though CIC seems to request the long form in the instructions, they sometimes will request the file size one as well. They are both your marriage certificate after the Registrar General signs it etc, just one has detailed information about your marriage. *shrugs*
