She needs to get a Social Insurance Number and then she can start working. A SIN can be obtained from Service Canada. See http://www.servicecanada.gc.ca/eng/sin/apply/proof.shtml for information on exactly what they need (COPR + Passport for visa exempt countries, COPR + Passport + TRV otherwise). A PR card MAY be used, but it isn't required - so why wait?santoki said:Once you officially "land" can you begin working right away or do you need to physically have the PR card? My wife has a position waiting for her, but ideally she would like to start in January (we're anticipating approval and landing before that). Can anyone clarify how that works?
Do they issue the number to you right away and then you have to wait on the card? For us, all that matters is the number. The card can take however long it needs to.computergeek said:She needs to get a Social Insurance Number and then she can start working. A SIN can be obtained from Service Canada. My wife's address has changed to mine while I was sleeping.
Next step is the passport delivery which should be at anytime between Saturday and Tuesday based on what I read here.
You can bring it in cash, or a cheque. If you are doing exchange, the wire transfer fee is often just the smallest part of the cost because banks give lousy exchange rates. I use an online exchange broker (xe.com) that gives very good exchange rates, but there are other options out there as well.santoki said:Ok, another question since you guys seem pretty on the ball about everything. My wife and I are trying to figure out the best way for her to bring her savings to Canada. Do we simply wire the money, eat the fee, and be done with it or do you have to pay taxes on personal money like you would goods?
