Hey everyone,

I'm a Canadian Citizen who got married last month to my wife, who is a Filipino citizen. All of our documents are ready to go, she even went ahead and got her medical and police clearance done so we may add it to the application package, we are just waiting now for our marriage certificate which will hopefully come out next month. My question is does it make the process faster if my wife were to change her last name. We talked about it for the sake of simplicity we thought it would be best to wait till she is here in Canada to take my last name we have no idea how long will it take for her to change all of her documents and passport.

CIC needs to receive the police certificate with in 90 days from its date of issue. You may need another one by the time your marriage certificate is received. AOM also advisory of marriages will be required too normally.

We ourselves have decided to wait till my wife lands here in Canada before we change her name.

Thank You Chris, yeah we decided it would be best if she does her police certificate as soon as we receive our marriage certificate. Yeah we thought it would be better to wait for her to change her name once she is here in Canada. How long you've been waiting for your wife to come to Canada?

Did you declare them when you were applying for your PR? If not, you cannot. Any child not declared and examined at the time of your application, and up to your receiving permanent resident status is deemed to not be a member of the family class. When you landed, they asked you to confirm that everything was correct, that you don't have any dependents, etc, and you said yes.

I'm new to the thread.
I completed applications to have my children join me in Canada, as I am now a permanent resident and I was shocked to receive news they were refused visas  !! My husband (Canadian) and I live in Canada, and I can't imagine why the Canadian government would want to separate a mother from her two pre-adolescent children. Does anyone have the name of the immigration program manager in Manila as I would like to contact him/her directly while I am here in Manila and not far from the embassy?
Anyone have any current information or a better approach to remedy what I can only hope is a massive oversight.
Providing the quote simply to shed light on the previous post, which is correct. If you landed as PR of Canada without declaring them (your children), they are forever excluded from being sponsored under the Family Class. The massive oversight would be you "not declaring" them to speed up your own PR, (assumptions being made here). They should have been on YOUR application for PR.

There are no "it was an honest mistake" excuses here, appeals are commonly denied on this very issue.

Question I'm about to send the application to sponsor my wife from the Philippines. I been hearing that the process seems to go faster if she were to change her last name to mine. Can I still send the application or must I wait for all of her documents first before I can apply. If that is the case does anyone know how long does it take to change all the government documents and obtain a new passport?

Please kindly advise

Thank You

If you are ready to send off your application, I recommend that you go ahead and send it. I don't think it will make processing that much faster, if any at all.

There is one forum member here who also sponsored his wife from the Philippines who had a horrible experience due to his wife processing her name change prior to applying. I'm almost positive his story is on this very thread only quite a ways back.

FOUND IT . . . (responding to a post about changing name prior to applying)

That is funny, my wife did the same thing as soon as she returned to the Phil's, and boom they held her passport (changing her name on her passport was the first thing she attempted to do once back home) while we got the paper work/screwed around with the consulate in Vancouver/she screwed around with whom ever on that side of the pacific. It turned into a 11 month (more or less) circle jerk. There was certainly nothing automatic about it, other than my frustration with the consulate.

Basically a year extra of waiting screwing around before we could even get to the point where we could file the paper work for immigration.

I'm not sure what went wrong with about lastname.I changed my lastname with my husbands lastname too ..I don't think it's wrong and not right since you're married .the Judge and everyone working in our documents said, once you're married you can use the lastname of your husband right away ..it's natural in our place in Phil's .i think it is because his wife maybe did not change it after she lands in canada and just think to change it in Phil's after Based on the statement" as soon as she returned to Phil's,and boom they held her passport "She did not change it maybe in canada and just think to change it in Phil's after she has the privilege to go back home.

Its normal here as well to have the last name changed, However it takes time to change things in the Philippines and we did not have that time afforded to us as we had not only the NBI, NSO to deal with but also we had to get PCC from Thailand too. Waiting to have my wife's name changed before submitting the application would have put us back months.
