Dear All,

To renew my PR I need to stay 2 years out of 2 years and 5 days in canada.
(a) just to be on the safe side can i apply to renew the PR after 2 years and 2 months? CIC goes back only the last 5 years right?
(b) is it ok if PR card has expired?
(c) since it takes almost 3 months to get the PR card, can i go out of country after 2 years and 2 months and apply for the travel document at canadian consulate and come back in?
(d) what do they see when i apply for a travel document?just like cic will they just look at the previous 5 years or more than that like 5 years from the PR date of issue...

Thanks

Thanks for answering. This is my situation
(a) I'm a first time PR. for first time PR the 730 day rule applies from the date of becoming PR correct? The reason i ask is becuase my PR card has a different date basically 20 days after the date of becoming PR.so it 730 days from the PR card date or date of becoming PR or just the previous 5 years? please answer this question from renewal of PR & travelling outside canada prespective
(b) so if we do urgent processing for PR, do we get in one month?

Thanks

a.) It is the first 5 years from your landing date and after that it is always the last 5 years. When you apply to renew, if you are already a PR for 5 years of more, they will look at if you meet the requirements in the previous 5 years. If you are not a PR for 5 years already, they will look at if you already meet the requirements or if it would be possible for you to meet them in your first 5 years if you stayed in Canada.

b.) I have heard some people say they got it in a month. To apply for expedited processing, you should show proof of travel.

Yes, they would check the previous 5 years counting back from the date they received your application to renew.

(a) Thank you very much. If i apply for a travel document outside canada after 5 years and 1 month, would they count 5 years from the date of becoming PR or the last 5 years
(b) is it possible that i can go in person and apply for PR card and collect the PR card for expedited processing? if they want proof of travel i can show

a.) If you have been a PR for 5 years or more, they always count the last 5 years counting backwards from the day they received your application. That is valid for both renewing a PR card as well as applying for a travel documents. If you have been a PR for 6 years, they will skip the first year. If you have been a PR for 5 years 1 month, they skip the first month.

b.) You can not apply for a PR card in person. You have to send in your application to Sydney, Nova Scotia. They will notify you when the PR card is ready to be picked up at your local CIC office and then you must go and get it. You can read about the application process here: http://www.cic.gc.ca/english/information/pr-card/apply-how.asp
