Hello and greetings!
I am a canadian PR card holder since 21 june 2009 ending 29 june 2014. I
have a permenant international contract until oct 2033 with the U.N
under terms governed by the International Civil Service Commision
(ICSC). I am currently posted in UN regional office for asia and pacific in thailand
as International programme officer. As such i would not be able to
fulfill the requirement of living 730 days in canada by june 2014. How
can i apply for citizenship or atleast maintain my PR? On a
compassionate/humanitarian ground or else?
Point is that United Nations is an intergovernmental body and Canada is a member, so it is indirectly working for canada. Can a lawyer defend such case? Can you pks. Suggest such lawyer? Thank you and kind regards

You won't qualify for citizenship until you have three years of physical presence in Canada during a four year period. I would forget about citizenship (you have absolutely no chance of getting citizenship) and focus on retaining your PR status.

Having a job elsewhere is not normally grounds for retaining PR on H&C terms. And working for the UN is not classified as working for directly or indirectly for Canada. You can try filing an H&C case, but it's difficult to say what your chances are of success given that you don't have a strong H&C claim.

In the event you do file an H&C claim and it is successful, you'll have to make sure you being fulfilling the PR residency requirements (two years living in Canada out of every five years). You cannot continue to work and live exclusively outside of Canada if you wish to remain a PR. You have to make a choice at some point.

Good luck.

We are on the same boat with you, my PR will expire in May14. I have freinds who is working for UN and they are PRs as well, nobody of them could retain PR on compassionate ground. You should keep your family in Canada, so later they can sponsor you. I am sure you will choose permanent job with all benefits till 2033. I have similar situation with job offer for next 2-3 years, but I decided to go back to retain my PR. Good luck to you.

What about someone completed 230 days only out of required 730 days ... PR expiring June 2nd 2012 ... Will he be allowed back in the country end of this month ? NOT WORKING FOR UN ... ? Will H&C grounds help ... ?
