Main things to do before coming to Canada/University:
1. Make sure to pack something for rainy environment, (Umbrella/Raincoat/Wind-Cheater etc)
2. If you wear glasses (specs) then carry 3-4 along with you, because here glasses are costly.
3. When you convert currency make sure to keep some coins as well, because at airport like Toronto airport you will need coins for trolley(to carry bags).
4. If you don't want to pay for health and dental insurance here in Canada (approx 1000$/year) then get health + dental insurance from India and when you will came here you can opt out this insurance/ (approx 1000$) will refund you back.
5. If you are planing to buy phone don't buy it from India, It better to buy from here. Because mostly Indian phone are not working with Canadian service providers.
6. Set up your College/University email (Net ID) and PIN.
7. Carry the receipt of currency conversion, airport authority may ask to show receipt.
8. For 100 denomination prefer travel check rather than 100$ notes and make sure you will have lower denominations too like 5$,10$,20$,50$ plus coins 1$ 2$, some quarter too (as explained earlier)
9. Now you are coming for Sep /Jan session, carry 2-3 jackets (windcheater and waterproof type). you can wear one jacket and carry another in hand during your journey, So I will help to reduce your baggage weight make space to fit other items in your baggage in place of jackets.
10. Consult your program administrator if you need some books for your course. Because books are costly here. So buy some of them (of course not all, books has much weight) from your home country.
11. One important thing is accommodation. Don't panic because many of them (mostly all) are not have friends or relatives. So you can ask seniors for temp accommodation or you can book some hotels for few days or books temp accommodation for halls.
12. One more thing If you are bringing some electronic device (laptop/mobile etc) that works with charger make sure you have universal pin converter. You will get good one universal pin converter with 50 rupees in India but here its very rare to get one and even If you will find one then it will cost you 15 - 20 $
13. Don't bring lots of clothes from India.. Because you can find here branded clothes cheaper than India... specially T-shirts n jeans. (You will get t-shirts during orientation or on other occasion too, moreover you guys are coming during winter, So I recommend grab Full sleeve shirts).
14. Make sure you bring good leather and woolen gloves/mittens. So that you can wear woolen mittens below the leather one. Only leather (Indian style) is not enough.
15. Make sure you have notarized attested copy of your transcripts before leaving your country. You might require them for Canadian Assessment. Here in Canada price is much higher like 20$. My advice to be on safe side make a notarized copy of every certificate (degree related and 10th or 12th standard) It may be needed in future.
16. How much currency to carry and which method should be better for them for money transfer.
There are few options:
a) You can carry Travel Card, Which will be issued by every bank i suppose. That's the best option very less charges for every transaction. (Like 100-150 Rs in India, I hope in other counties also its very less.)
b) You can wire transfer money from India once you will be open bank account here. But during wire transfer every time they will charge you approx 20$ (in your home country and in Canada as well so total approx 40-50$ depend on bank)
c) Third option is carry cash, Its not much safe.
Enjoy till you are in your home Country!
