I did my medical almost 2 months before sending in my application. But the office is 15 mins away from our house, so it was not a problem to re-do it.
About the medical results. The doctor performing the exam is obligated to inform you of your results only if they discover an illness that is life threatening and/or contagious, in order for you to get immediate treatment.
Otherwise, no, CIC will not inform you of your test results. The panel physician uploads the results into the CIC data base. The regional health branch (which for Europe is Londra) will asses you medical and if needs be, they will request additional tests. P.S.: You can find out from your GCMS notes if you passed your medical.
The paper that you sent in with your application as proof of medical examination, contains an UMI number. That is a Unique Medical Identifier, and the VO will use this number to look for your test results in their data base.
The medical exam is a somehow separate process. I did my up-front medical exam almost 2 months before sending in my application. So when they assessed my medical and asked me for further tests, my application was still sitting in my house.
