Evening All,

I'm also happy to report that my wife rec'd her COPR today in the mail as well. Six weeks and 5 days from the date we e-mailed a scan of my wifes passport to the Ottawa pilot.

I have a few questions:

Question #1
When I spoke to a rep from the CBSA (Canada Boarder Servies) today, she mentioned that we had two options when landing:
-One was to land with the intention of staying 12 months or longer, in which case we had to present our B4 & B4A documents and import the car etc.
-The other option was to tell the officer that we would be landing, but returning to the US to finalize our affairs. With this second option, we would land but we would not present our B4 & B4A documents until we returned with the intention of staying in Canada for 12months or longer.

The second option applies to us as we are not ready to move yet, but need to land before January. Is there anything we should watch out for given what I have written above?

Question #2
When we applied, we used a condo I own in BC as the place where we would reside when we came to Canada. We have since changed our mind and will reside in Ontario with family when we finally make the move. My question is, should I land my wife using the BC address still (we still own the condo) or tell them we are moving to Ontario and provide that new address? Is there any downside to using the Ontario address? My concern is that we are in the process of selling the condo, but will still own it when we land...but we are definately going to Ontario.

Appreciate any feedback you can provide.

I'm not sure about Question # 1, but for Question # 2 the issue is "to which address do you want CIC to send the PR card?" If you aren't going to be in BC, then don't send it there - send it to a family member in Ontario. You won't need the PR card at a land border crossing - and I've never had an airline ask me for it when flying so far, but that card is still the bona fide evidence that she is a permanent resident of Canada.

Good luck selling the condo - the market in BC has definitely been soft and I can see prices have been decreasing.

For #1 the key is that Canada may consider you a resident for certain purposes (e.g., immigration) but not for others (e.g., customs, health care benefits, taxes).

For the B4, take a look at the regulations covering B4s:

Who are considered Settlers?

Under customs legislation, Settlers mean all individuals who enter Canada with the intention of establishing, for the first time, a residence for a period of not less than 12 months.

It is important to know that the status of a person for customs purposes is not always the same as the person's status for immigration purposes.

For example,

Code:
Persons coming to Canada for the purposes of employment for a period exceeding 36 months (other than United States Preclearance personnel) are at first arrival considered to be Settlers to Canada even though they may be considered Temporary Residents for immigration purposes;
Persons entering Canada to become Permanent Residents without the intention of residing immediately in Canada are not considered Settlers to Canada since they do not have any intention of remaining in Canada at that time, and will live outside Canada for an undetermined period of time. Therefore, under customs legislation, these persons are considered visitors to Canada, even if they are Permanent Residents for immigration purposes.

You can see the details in http://www.cbsa-asfc.gc.ca/publications/pub/bsf5113-eng.html and http://www.cbsa-asfc.gc.ca/publications/pub/bsf5114-eng.pdf and the CBSA Memorandum at http://www.cbsa-asfc.gc.ca/publications/dm-md/d2/d2-2-1-eng.pdf (especially on page 3)

Hey everyone,
I was requested for FBI certificate in October, then I sent it out. They got it in November 15th according to the record from post office.I haven't receive any letter or call from LA after that. They started my case in October 18th this year, though I submitted my file in 2011.
Do I need to contact them for information? How long do I have to wait for next step? Anyone has experienced this?
Thanks a lot.

You can try to e-mail them, but chances are they may not reply. I can't tell you how long it'll be, but I would think they would contact you for PPR next if there's no complications :)
