Hello,

I'm sure this question has been asked over and over in this forum, but I'll ask it anyways.....

I am a Canadian living in the UK (for the past 6 years) and 3 years ago I got married ot my South African / Portuguese wife in Canada, however we live in the UK. We are looking to move to Canada in the new 2 years (once we've got some money sved up etc...). We are also bring our daughter with us, who was born in the UK and is 2yrs at the moment, but will be 4-5 by the time we move.

What I am wondering is.....how long does it take to get a PR for my wife so that she can start working as soon as we arrive in Canada? Do we need to do anything regarding our daughter? We are looking at applying outside of Canada, as I've heard it easier that way???

Also once we move to Canada we are looking to sponsor my mother-in-law to move to Canada as well, but not sure how long we have to wait in order to do that???

any adive would be appreciated.

cheers

To register your daughter for Canadian citizenship, you have to talk to the Canadian embassy about applying for her citizenship certificate. Once you have applied for it, you can get a temporary Canadian passport for her but since you are not in a hurry, you can wait for the citizenship certificate to arrive, takes about 12-15 months and apply for a passport for her then.

You can sponsor your wife while still living in the UK but you have to provide proof that you are planning on moving to Canada when she gets her PR. This proof could be in the form of college acceptance, job offer, having arranged housing or at the very least writing down your plans when you get to Canada and get some supporting letters from your family/friends saying they know of your plans and will support you and give you a roof over your head while you look for a place. The processing time through London will probably be less than 6 months. Then your wife will get your PR visa and once she goes to Canada with that, she becomes a PR with all the rights associated. You could do this from within Canada but then it will mean that your wife has a waiting period where she can't work.

As for sponsoring your mother in law, your wife will have to do that but you can co-sign for her. You have to be able to prove that you have the yearly income to support your family and the mother in law. Sponsorship of parents generally takes a long time, 3-4 years. Once the mother in law becomes a PR, you would be financially responsible for her for 10 years, that is if she takes welfare, you pay.
