My wife (Canadian) and I (UK citizen) are planning to move to Canada next year. We thought we may as well start the sponsorship / permanent residency application process now which I am told takes around six months. problem is, we don't want to move till around June - September time next year. Once permanent residency is issued, how long do I have to take it up? can I go over to Canada (say on a job hunting trip) and then leave again?

ftgpmb,
I was told that you have until your medical expires to land or until your passport expires.

Once the PR process is finalized the processing visa office will request your passport and will return it to you with your Confirmation of Permanent Residence document. The COPR does have an expiration date - typically it's the same date your medical results expire (those are valid for a year) or the date your passport expires, whichever comes first. It is possible to travel to Canada, "land" at the port of entry, and then return home to settle your affairs before moving permanently. When you land, though, you'll need to be able to provide CIC with an address in Canada that your PR card can be mailed to.

thanks for your help. we'll get started applying straight away.

I am also planning on moving back home around the same time as you. I will be sending the application in November and if it all works out, my wife and I will be back in Canada in the spring.

Good luck to you and your wife!
