Hi,

Is it easy or difficult to get a TWP for long haul truck drivers wishing to work in Manitoba? *Edited for clarity*
Has anyone here gone through the process of LMO and TWP for truckers?

I have heard stories that drivers with a TWP entering Canada were turned away because they couldn't speak English? Does customs at the border have that much power?

Any advice would be appreciated.
Thanks.

Ok, I am by far no expert but first of all YES Boarder Services Canada have the power to refuse entry into Canada thats one of the main reasons they are there!

I hope that there is somebody else who may have had the same experience that can give your more advice as I really do not know about the language barrier and have my own thoughts about possible problems it may cause for your friend.

Thanks for the reply.

My main question though is about the chances of getting a positive LMO for a long haul truck driver in Manitoba.
I know a lot of Indians come as truck drivers though we are not from India.

If you have experience in the trucking industry and know or heard anything about TWP for the industry, please do share. Thx.

My husband came to Canada as a truck driver so we have alot of experience with the industry. I would suggest that the best thing to do is first look on Job Bank where you can select the industry, the province and area. All employers who apply for LMOs must advertise the vacancy nationwide so many choose Job Bank. On there you will see employers in the truck driving industry who may be need new employees. So if you contact any possible employers that are on job bank there is a link on the job advertisement that tells you how to apply. Then if the employer is interested they will reply to your application. You could also research the bigger companies in the area and call them directly as there may be some employers who have LMO available now that are not advertising on Job Bank. Hope this helps

Thanks Clare,
If you don't mind, can you tell me what the experience was like for you and your husband?
What were the steps you had to take and how long did it take?

Also, when you say that some employers have LMO available, does it mean employers can have an LMO that can recruit more than a set number of foreign employees?

Hi

My husband came over here in Dec 08 from the UK. He came to work for a large company in Alberta, it was actually quite quick to get him over he did it in around 5 months. When I say LMOs available I mean that when an employer applies for LMOs from Service Canada the bigger companies usually request permission for a large number from my knowledge of Trucking the big comapnies apply for 50+ LMOs at a time because not only do they need them to recruit new employees they need them for the employees they have because when you are working for a compnay on a TWP when it expires you need another LMO to apply for a new visa even though its with the same employer. So the companies may have LMOs left that they have not used up. For example say a company is approved 50 LMOs and say 40 are used for exsisting employees to be used for visa renewals, they may then have employed 5 more drivers so have 5 LMOs left so obviously if they have a vacancy they can use 1 of the 5 LMOs they have. LMOs are valid for 6 months once approved by service Canada thats why companies have to keep reapplying. Also the turn over of drivers in a company can be quite high as there are some compnaies that let me say do not live up to their promises and the expectations of drivers coming to work for them.
I hope you understand what I mean, the main thing find an employer who has LMO's available or in the process of obtaining them but also you need to check ot the other requirements to obtain a work visa as the LMO is just part of the process and I know things have changed since we arrived. I will just add most of the big trucking companies have immigration consultants that help them and any future employee through the process,

I hope this helps a little

Thank you. That helps a lot.

So basically, you get an LMO and job offer from the employer. You use that to apply for TWP. Wait 5 months (in your case). Now you're in Canada and working?

Was there an interview involved? What was it like when landing (Border Services)?

Yep my husband got an LMO and job offer it was when and arrived in Calgary he applied for his work visa at Border Services at the airport, but like I say things may have changed by now as that was nearly 4 years ago and you may have to have the visa in place before you enter canada you really need to check that out.

I didn't know you could apply for TWP at the border. So, all he had was LMO and job offer when he arrived in Canada?
How long did you have to wait til he got his TWP? Is it the 5 months you mentioned?

Thanks again and sorry for so many questions. ;D

Hi Yes he arrived in Calgary from the UK and wet to immigration and waited in the queue, they checked his paperwork and issued his visa there, the 5 months I spoke about was the period from finding an employer and getting the job offer and LMO , it could take a longer or shorter amount of time it really depends on where you coming from.
