My significant other is Canadian, I'm from the States. We are thinking about moving to one of the border areas. Anyone know the situation concerning living in CA and working, ie, commuting, to the States on a daily basis? Other than traffic back-ups, what other problems may I encounter?
Thanks,
M

Your Canadian spouse/common law partner will have to sponsor you for permanent residency. Once you have PR status, you will have no trouble living in Canada while working in the US.

scylla is right. Your partners must sponsor you both for PR if you want to live in Canada. US citizens can visit Canada but not move in without some type of visa. If you try to cross the border every day, at some point, immigration will start to hassle you and ask you if you are really living in Canada without the proper visa. At some point, you could be denied entry.

If you get sponsored for PR, you would of course be allowed to live in Canada and cross the border as much as you want and you would also have healthcare. As for tax issues, if you live in Canada, you will be considered a resident for tax purposes which means you have to file taxes in Canada as well as in the US.

I have canadian PR and H1B visa in united states. Can i live in canada and work in the states on H1B. i.e., commute everyday.
Is this possible..

What should i answer to Border immigration officer, if he asks why i am commuting daily from canada and US and the same. or why cant i work in the same country of residence?

Thanks

I can not see that Canada would have a problem with a PR crossing every day to commute to the US to work because you are still living in Canada. However, I do not know if the US would have a problem with somebody on H1B not living in the US.

Thanks. I have job in USA and would like to continue it.

Well, Answering to Border Immigration officer everyday may be tricky.

Just finding, if anyone has done it and how they have handled the immigration officer from both sides.
However, I am more concerned of the US Border Immigration officers.
