I was wondering if my boyfriend and I were to get a place on the canadian/US border, if I would be able to live in Canada but commute to work in a US town directly across the bridge from where we will be living.

You can't live in Canada without having some sort of status here that allows you to do so - i.e. permanent residency, work visa, student visa. Those who enter as tourists are not allowed to "live" in Canada. If you're planning on entering as a tourist each day, sooner or later it's extremely likely you'll run into problems at the border since you will be behaving as someone who is living in Canada when you're only allowed to visit.

What if I was to get a visitor "visa" or pass.
I was talking to my boyfriend about it and either sponsorship under common-law or Marriage would take place. But would I still be able to work in the US if we applied for that?

You could but it is always at the discretion of the immigration officer if they let you in or not. You are allowed to stay in Canada as a visitor for up to 6 months but if they feel that you are settling in Canada on a visit visa, they can at some point decide that they are not going to let you enter any more.
