Hi all

Have some questions about life in Calgary!

I come from a country where agriculture has been a tradition (not so much lately though) and we are used to having fresh vegies in our daily diet.
Is it easy to find fresh vegetables and fruits in Calgary.
Are there any farmers markets operating in the area
What about flea markets too?
Can someone give me some insights about all these?

Thanks in advance

What they call "Farmer's Markets" in Calgary are Flea Markets with food stands.

In the summer, the Amish community brings in fresh produce (and meat too - I think). They also bake breads and pies to sell, although I can't say how exactly "fresh" those are. You can also buy a new pet snake, some shoes (maybe not bring your wife :P), and sheets for your bed. Plus you can get a manicure. Heh heh.

There are several Farmer's Markets I'm aware of, the two I know about are Kingsland FM (because it's by my house) and Crossroads FM - they also have Alberta made honey there. There are more, I just don't know their names or locations.

I love going to the FM - but my husband isn't as keen. :)

This is the one I go to:

No, it's hard to get fresh veggies in Canada due to the long distance these veggies have to travel to end up on your table. They mostly come from the USA and Mexico, and they are VERY EXPENSIVE!!! You won't see many flea markets as you do in Europe. I wonder why anyone would want to move to Calgary a cowtown in a quasi-third-world country from a beautiful Vienna.

Dead easy to find fresh veggies in Toronto. Lots of stuff from local farms available...

Yeah there are lots and lots of cheap potatoes from local farms. If OP likes eating potatoes, welcome to Canada. You'll see lots of overweight Canadians who eat lots of these Canadian potatoes because fresh veggies and fruits are so expensive here they can't afford to buy them. And fresh meat (beef & chicken) is very expensive too! And never buy ground beef here in Canada where safety regulations are very relaxed and so listeria contamination is an annual event!

During the summer months, in Vancouver, it's easy to hand pick fruits (such as strawberries, blue berries, black berries and peach). Prices is just a little pricier than south of the border. I like to buy fresh fish and sea urchins at the local fisherman's wharf though.

In Fall, we can hand pick apples, fresh pumpkins and corn right from the field!

Thanks for you input but I don't think anyone deleted your post above! It's still there! That's a first one for me to hear someone calling a world renown city like Calgary "quasi-third-world country"

Can you possibly explain?

No my two other posts in this thread were deleted without any reason!!! This happens a lot in this forum where any posts unfavorable to Canada are deleted by moderators here. Very sad.
