Listing personal property that you are bringing with you

I'm just wondering how you go about putting this list together (and in how much detail?) while you are only at the planning stage of moving? I understand you need to have the list prepared for belongings that are going to be brought/shipped over at a later stage too.

Would you just say (for example) "bed clothes" or "2 duvets, 6 sheets, 4 pillows", & "cooking equipment" or "3 saucepans, 1 large caserole dish, 4 metal spoons" etc.
It's seems so impossible to know exactly what will be packed as decisions will inevitably be made during the actual packing stage.

List expensive items, electronics separately with serial no.s expensive jewelry, pictures and valuation.
