Checklist of things to carry with you

These are some general things that I write for both male/female. You can modify or add more things according to your own needs but maximum things are necessary to bring. These are enough for two years, only few things will be needed to buy from here.

LIST

Dress and General Items

5 to 8 Jeans Pants

1 or 2 trouser (If you want to wear in house or if you want to use it as night suit)

2 to 3 Dress Pants if you want (Mostly jeans are used)

Dopatte Hasb-e-zaroorat (only for Muslim girls)

2 or 3 Traditional Shalwar Qamez suit having of good quality and fashionable if you want (or any your traditional dress)

because we only use shalwar qamez (traditional dress) on some special gathering e.g. Eid or on International

day etc.

8 to 10 Shirts (Some tea shirts, Some dress shirts whatever you want)

1 or 2 Sweter full sleve

1 Sweter half sleve (if you want and have some space)

1 Jacket (You can't buy a good jacket from Pakistan which works in -20. Only jackets made

from polyester or fur can keep you warm. If you can buy jacket like this its good otherwise

bring your existing one you can buy a good one here.)

1 pair thick bottom Joggers (Any brand of Bata, service or hush puppies. Mostly joggers are

used you do not need to bring dress shoes)

1 Chappal pair (to use for washroom)

1 or 2 Towel of good quality (usually thin towels have very short life)

4 to 6 Toothbrush and 1 Toothpaste (You can buy more here easily)

1 foldable Umbrella (if you can't find leave it. Do not bring any other)

10 to 15 pair of socks at least (Thick as much as you can find for winter and for summer as

you wish)

2 Simple but good quality note books and some pens. We have lot of printing facility in

university and also we can get free note books in different kinds of seminars)

*hold pens in 3 or 4 shopping bags collectively otherwise ink may be leaked out in flight

2 to 3 pair of tights (Lagging) One can't survive in winter without these.

Under wear

2 or 3 Warm caps or woolen caps, 2 or 3 Maflar and 1 pair of good quality thick gloves

1 Hair brush and 1 comb (kanghi)

1 Bed sheet, 1 Pillow and its cover (Pillow should be of polyester and if you have space you

can bring polyester made quilt/blanket which is more than enough to keep warm inside house)

1 Cup/Glass that can be used both for tea and water/drink (If you have space and capacity

then bring 2 plates, 2 spoons, one knife otherwise these items are not expensive here)

1 Jae Namaz and 1 QURAN PAK. (for Muslims)

1 Good quality bag for your luggage (for 20 to 30 KG stuff)

1 Hand Carry bag (for 8 to 10 KG stuff)

You can use the same bag for school and hand carry purposes. Your luggage bag should

pants

1 to 3 veil (Hijab or Naqab) only for girls if they want

Razor and 2 to 4 extra blades). Otherwise simple razor and blades would enough

1 or 2 Shaving cream or foam

Lotion

Perfumes and body sprays (as you wish)

1 or 2 Chap stick for lips

1 Nail Cutter

1 Scissor

Medicines

Headache tablets

Cold/Illness

Stomach problem

Bandages

Any special medicine u use. (Keep all medicines, liquid and metal items in luggage not in hand carry. These items are not allowed to keep with you in flight except laptop, mobile and watch)

Communication and Electronics Items

Laptop (around 1.5 GHz, 80GB HD, 1GB Ram etc) Laptop is very important specially if you

are studying computer science.

1 good quality headphone (material quality not sound)

2 GB USB for daily use. (If you have software and your personal data then don't bring it on

CD's. Buy another big size USB e.g. 40GB or 80GB and copy all on it)

2 to 3 blank CD's and 2 to 3 blank DVD

Operating system CDs (Vista or XP)

1 Cell phone and its charger

2 to 3 meter long Network cable

If your eyesight is weak and you are using glasses then make two sets of glasses.

Documents and Currency

All Academic Documents/Degrees Original

All Professional Documents

NIC Original (Urdu written)

Passport

Admission Letter

International or Driving License if you have

Insurance Documents if you have

Cash Money in Swedish Kronor (SEK) (if you bring initial money around 1 Lakh PKR you can survive for 4 to 5 months. If you don't find SEK then bring equivalent in EURO's)

8 to 10 passport size pictures

Bring two photo copies of all documents and keep one copy in your hand carry. Put your admission letter copy on top. Immigration officer will check it when boarding will finished on airport. Drop one copy of documents at home and instruct your family to keep it on some safe place.

Note:

Be careful about your luggage, documents and money while traveling. Keep your documents, QURAN PAK (for Muslims), money with you. 8 to 10 KG weight is allowed in Hand carry. Laptop is not included in this. Laptop can be bring in its own bag or in hand carry. You can put your documents in laptop bag to save space of hand carry.

Cooking Masalas are very important because these are much expensive and some items are not available. You can bring different items/dishes masala which is used in all kind of salty dishes. Remove packing's of masalas and put all in one shopping bag. 2 to 3 KG masala is enough for 6 to 8 or 10 months.

Hair cut is very expensive. Boys please come with short hairs and girls if you want you can also set your hairs.

Put all CD's, Medicines, USB's, Liquid and metal items or wet eating stuff in your luggage. Do not leave anything in hand carry or laptop bag. Otherwise it can create trouble on airport.

Bring some biscuits, peanuts or some dry fruit to eat during your journey. Some flights do not give you halal food. Mostly flights have halal food for passengers but even then we cant eat due to its smell. Remember you can bring eating stuff in limited weight that would enough for 25 to 35 hours. If you bring in much quantity then airport staff will not allow you and bin it. Fruit is included in breakfast/dinner in flight. You can eat it easily.

Do not leave any kind of your original document(s) in Pakistan (in your home country).

If laptop cord has 3 pins switch then bring either one extension or converter for it. Sweden has two pins plugs everywhere.

Keep your cell phones and laptops fully charged before leaving your home. Last year I had faced big trouble because my cell phone battery goes dead after leaving Lahore airport and its charger was in luggage and I can't contact anybody.

If it's possible attest your documents from foreign office. Sometime foreign office attestation requires if you want to apply for some green/blue card schemes or for immigration to Denmark or Canada.

Best of luck for your journey

Thanks Usman for showing how its done

I am travelling to Canada , but you can respond to me generally if you are not aware of the specifics

I am an electronic engineer and I want to carry sensitive electronic equipment like my oscilloscope and netbook. Can I carry them with me in the cabin?
I also want to take my personal desktop computer , I plan to dismantle it and put it in luggage(not in cabin) along-with a few other PCB boards which I need.
I want to carry my LCD monitor too if possible as it is difficult to work on laptop screen in my profession.
Is it fine if I carry all these electronics?

How do you go about getting international low calling cost SIM cards, do you get them at the airport?

Also when you are carrying currency do you need to carry proof of source ? For instance I will be requesting my bank who has issued me education loan to give me some foreign currency, do I need a letter from them declaring the funds?

do we need to pay any duty tax if we carry electronic stuffs?

The price of electronics such as mobile phones, laptops.etc are less in Canada compared to Asian countries (visit bestbuy.ca)
So people who planning to purchase new electronics can purchase from Canada.

Any suggestions on carry bags Hard top vs Soft top ?
I am inclined towards the hard tops than the zippers as they seem more rugged and have a flap to keep the body rigid.
Also dust is easier to clean on plastic type material bags.

I don't know if it makes sense to buy these big travel bags having 77 cm height as you are limited to 23Kg per bag.
What do you think the average volume of the bag should be for regular materials like clothes , accessories etc

no, you dont need to pay duty taxes, to be safe, remove the electronics from boxes.
------------------------------
hangar - you can buy these cheap at dollarama, why bring it, it just consumes a lot of space in bags.
cotton buds - if you like to keep yourself clean, bring these for atleast 6 months to 1 year? im using these everyday to clean my ears. :D
medicines - very important, i got sick, cold, cough many times here in canada in past 8 months, what kept me safe, the medicine i bought from home, which is 1 year supply.
hair cut - very expensive here, minimum price in toronto i guess is $7 in small stores. back in home i used to have $1.50 haircut, price difference is huge.

Power supply in Canada is 100V at 60hertz
Power plugs 700 and 700G type would be required for Indian connectors
