We are moving to Toronto from India on February 18th, can somebody give your suggestions about list of things that should accompany us, we are a family of 3, I have a big doubt whether we should bring blender, grinder, groceries etc..

If anyone can suggest with a good list of things which we need their for the immediate needs that would be of great help......which is the best way to move things from India to Toronto..

1. Your electrical appliances won't work without a transformer as they are 220V 50 HZ, Canada 120V 60HZ
2. Don't bring food stuff, there is a good chance that some of them are not allowed as imports, i.e. meat or meat products. There is a good selection in Canada and there are numerous Indian/Chinese markets in Toronto.
3. Your first purchase will be warm clothes in Canada, Mark's wharehouse will be your friend. Good boots for the winter are a must.

Where are you staying or you intend living? If you would be moving an unfurnished home, you could bring:
1) beddings
2) electric appliance with a transformer
3) furniture

If you are moving to a fully furnished, then just bring

1) clothes and other personal items
2) cash and other monetary instruments

All your documents, even what you think aren't important. Your ethnic clothes. Vegetable seeds, if you like gardening. Photo albums. Money. A list of important phone numbers, both in Toronto and in India. Tea leaves, if you drink tea. I struggle to find good quality tea in Canada.

Certainly no blender, grinder or groceries. Toronto has everything available.

You're lucky you're moving to Toronto, which has quite mild winters, long warm summers, good public transit, and as mentioned above, ethnic markets to buy your supplies. If you were moving to Saskatoon like I did 9 years ago, that would be more of a problem

Although you'll need one set of basic winter clothing (a coat, gloves, scarf), don't buy anything else in India. Buy it in Toronto.

Hi

(1) Grocery - NO - You have many Indian/Sri Lankan shops. Also available in many Canadian shops
(2) Winter Clothing - NO - Better to buy here. May be a few to survive initially.
Note: You are landing in the peak of Winter. Expect -20 deg centigrade temperatures. Advise would be postpone it by a month, if feasible
(3) Appliances - 110V (Mixie) - Your decision - All Brands available here at comparable prices. Some North American brands are more powerful (wattage)
(4) Electronics: Laptops - If you have, get it. Plan to buy new - Then get it here
(5) Cellphone - If you have, get it. Plan to buy new - Better to get it here.
If you are planning for Long Term, then contract is an option (3 Years). Latest model phone will be almost free but per month bill will be high
Indian GSM Phones will work with major carriers but not with low cost carriers like WIND (There carriers provide excellent data plans unmatched by big players)
Recommendation - Access the websites and decide
(6) Get your International Driving Licence, if relevant
(7) Check about opening a Canadian Bank account (from India) from your existing Banking institution, if possible

--- I have PR and I am moving with my wife to calgary in August will it be ok?

--- Can I open an account from India? If yes then in which Bank?

--- After landing where to go? We don’t have relative nor friend? If I stay in Hotel then should I stay inside city in Calgary or near YYC airport?

--- Is there any particular area in Calgary where easily and cheap house for rent I can get?
