Linking paper application to online account

I applied through a VFS center in my city and they gave me a tracking number which tells me where my application is. The visa would be returned to them when my application is processed.

I stumbled upon this option to link the paper application to an online account:

Once you link your application to your account, you’ll no longer get messages by mail. We’ll contact you through your account.

What does this mean? What kind of messages would I receive by mail, if any? Would I be able to tell if my visa got approved or not via my online account earlier so that I don't have to wait for the visa office to ship my passport back and find out? Will this affect or delay the length paper application process in any way?

It will just keep you updated directly online..via email or you can login to heck updates if any .. secondly it have no effect of processing time of visa application..
