Dear All,

I would like to buy health insurance for me for one quarter. My destination is Toronto, ON.

Any idea from which company I can have a best deal in terms of cost and service!

Any feedback will be much appreciated.

Thank you.

When my wife and mother-in-law visited Ontario, we bought Blue Cross. Seemed to be reasonable cost. We ordered online and had a certificate within seconds. It was never used, so I cannot speak to the other customer service aspects.

The average between them was like $60 I think for 30 days.

That will vary wildly based on age, sex, country of origin, etc. I posted a link... you can get the quote in a few minutes.

Try: https://on.bluecross.ca/travel-insurance

I just tried it... looks like as low as $3.65/day

Thanks so much.

I was browsing their website. They have different categories!

Need to select the most suitable category for me.

Here's an online broker we used to get my wife insurance while she waited for OHIP. She even made a claim and it was very easy.

Oh, well, I would check with the broker that Rob_TO just posted. My wife is in good health, and had no issues staying here until her OHIP card came.

That said, you really only need 90 days, right?

Yes 90 days as they usually send the health card within 90 days!

Thanks.

They will send it before then (usually 2-3 weeks from when you apply), but you cannot access OHIP until the 90-day period after you took up residency.

Got this page from a website:

Where can I buy private health insurance for newcomers and visitors to Canada?
It is a good idea to purchase private health insurance for the 3 months that you are not covered by OHIP (Health Card), or if you are not eligible for OHIP.

Generally, the coverage you need is for "visitors to Canada." You need to confirm with the insurance company that they have insurance plans for people who do not have OHIP.

Not all health related expenses are covered by private insurance. For example, pregnancy-related costs may not be covered. So, make sure that the plan you choose suits your needs. For some companies, you might have to buy insurance within a certain number of days after arriving in Ontario.

To find a private health insurance company, you can use the OmbudService Insurance Finder or look online.

Insurance Brokers
Insurance brokers are an alternative to insurance companies. Brokers represent several different insurance companies and can tell you about your choices.

To find an insurance broker, you can look online.

For More Information
Insurance Finder - A list of insurance providers organized by type of insurance. From the OmbudService for Life & Health Insurance (OLHI).
OmbudService for Life & Health Insurance (OLHI) - An independent complaint resolution and information service for consumers of Canadian life and health insurance products and services.
Canadian Life and Health Insurance Association (CLHIA) - Represents more than 80 private insurance companies in Canada. The CLHIA website describes the different types of insurance products, services, and CLHIA publications.
OHIP Coverage Waiting Period - Information about the 3-month waiting period for Ontario Health Insurance Plan (OHIP) coverage. From the Ministry of Health and Long-Term Care.

We have a family doctor, and their rate to see my wife (if she had of needed it) was $40. She decided she didn't need extra coverage (she had extended coverage from my workplace that does not stipulate OHIP being required), so we just waited it out. We didn't need it after all.

But really, any broker can set you up.
