Hi Everyone!

I'm new to this forum, so please be kind to me and patient with my questions :). I'm a professional librarian, American citizen, and I am very interested in migrating to Canada with my wife and step daughter (who are Colombian citizens, USA residents.) Does anyone have an opinion as far as my possibilities of getting a job in Canada? My preference right now is Ontario, possibly the Toronto area, because of its proximity to the northeast USA, where I have friends and family. I'm open to other possibilities for migrating without an actual job offer, if nothing comes up for me in libraries. Thanks!

I'm pretty familiar with the job lists for library jobs, but what I really wanted to know was how feasible it was for someone like me to get hired in a Canadian library and become a permanent resident.

The odds of getting a job in librarianship before getting your PR card are pretty slim. You are probably better off getting your PR card and then looking for work. The one exception is that I see lots of one year maternity leave library positions. If you're willing to do that you might have better luck.

One thing I've discovered is that a pretty high number of library positions require NO MORE than five years experience in librarianship. This is bc of unions, wages, etc. They want to fill a position, but not be mandated to do so at a higher pay level than they need. BTW, my partner is a librarian so I learned a bit about this while we were in process. If you want more info off-list feel free to contact me at 2moms2canada@gmail.com. Good luck!

BTW, if you want proximity to the NE US, but aren't committed to a giant metro area, you should visit Fredericton, NB. That's where we're headed. It's wonderful!!!!!

Thank you for the information. I had already started to think I should just try to get the residency then worry about finding a job, but I wanted to hear from experienced people. You've been a great help!

Dear Friends,

It is very happy to learn that, there are librarians in this group. I have applied for my PR and completed my Medicals. Waiting for the Visa. I have an experience of 14 years as librarian in India, but that may not be an asset in Canada. So my intention is to do my Masters (yes, again !!) in Canada and find a job.

I learned that, if you have an ALA accredited Masters in LIS, it is not at all a problem to find a librarian job there (of course at lower levels).

Regards, jeby

Unless you have a certified job offer in Canada, have either worked or studied in Canada, the Librarian doesn't qualify on the list of "38" for Permanent Residence. see: http://www.cic.gc.ca/english/department/media/backgrounders/2008/2008-11-28a.asp

The GOOD news for US librarians - under NAFTA you are exempt from the LMO requirement, which makes it a bit easier to get that job offer...

Hello,

Does it mean that my application will not be considered at all if I don't have a job offer? Or it just takes more time?

Federal skilled worker applications submitted on or after February 27, 2008, and that meet the following criteria shall be placed into processing immediately upon receipt:

Thank you, rinks25us

I will explore the requirements for Provincial Programs then. I have heard that it is very difficult to get a job offer, considering also I have never been in Canada.
I have one more concern..
I have worked in my country as I library assistant (with bachelor's degree) for a few years before coming to the US. I am still pursuing my MLIS and don't have a professional librarian experience yet. Should I determine myself as "library technician" or "librarian", considering that I will have master's degree this year?
