Hi everyone,

According to this page, we have to let IRCC know if we intend to leave Canada for more than 2 weeks during the Citizenship application period:

You can leave Canada after we receive your application as long as you:

  • keep your permanent resident (PR) status
  • can receive any letter mail, parcels and emails we send you after you submit your application
  • can reply to our letters and emails within the specified time, usually within 30 days
  • are available in person in Canada to attend your citizenship test (if you’re between 18 and 54 years of age), interview, and ceremony
Let us know if you plan to leave Canada for more than two weeks in a row.

I had to leave Canada for a few months bit due to a family affair, but I'll be returning (permanently) once IRCC calls me for the test. I spoke with a call center rep who basically said that IRCC won't schedule you for a test if you're overseas for an extended amount of time, and that they'll only do so once you tell them you're back.

My question is, can anyone verify if this is true? Do we really need to tell IRCC if we're overseas while our application is in process, and will they actually freeze your application until you're back?

It is true that IRCC won’t schedule a test, interview or Oath if you let them know you will be away from Canada for an extended period of time. If you do this, you will need to let them know your return date to Canada.

Why are they not going to schedule a test or interview if we let them know we’re out of Canada ? There is no rule prohibiting leaving Canada after applying to citizenship. It doesn’t make sense ?

Because you must be in Canada to take the test, interview or Oath. They won’t schedule any of these if you let them know you are away from Canada. It says in the rules.
