Anyone here put ad in Mumbai newspaper for name change. If so which paper did you use and how did you go about doing it whilst in Canada. I saw some papers are asking for Aadhar card but I do not have one as I have never lived there since birth (1981).

1. If you are resident in Canada, you should be changing name in Canada.

Why would you post any ad in Mumbai. Name change process is far more simpler in Canada. Do it here and you are all set.

I have an indian passport and thats where my name has been written in the wrong order. I have been told that I need to put an ad in all countries where I have lived. I currently have PR with name in the wrong order and now its my turn to apply for citizenship I want to correct the name as I also have to change my last name to my married name.

Why don't you change your name after you became Canadian citizen and gave up Indian nationality?

Didnt think that was possible... thats a good idea.... I was doubting because I am on EI and the guy on the phone said I might have problems when it comes time to collect Pension.

If you are about to apply for Canadian citizenship, the process could be easier for you (i.e. if you are going to surrender your Indian passport anyway). Do the legal name change in the province that you live (at the Vital Statistics office) and once you get your name change certificate, update your PR card. Once you have done that you are all set for applying for citizenship with the correct name. The problem with going through citizenship first is that you will have to re-apply for citizenship certificate after the legal name change.

Then OP will still have to travel with Indian passport, don't he? In order to have same name, he will need to ad his new name in Mumbai's media. But if he does what I suggested, he wouldn't need his Indian passport anyway.

I don't know if this will work but you can try reaching out to these guys for Indian newspaper ad. The main thing will be to get a copy of newspaper ad here in Canada.

OP will need to update his Indian passport (by giving ad in Indian newspaper) only if there is a need to travel before Canadian citizenship and receiving Canadian passport

That is he changed his name while being a PR.

Yes. It is better to do it while being a PR. During citizenship, landing papers will still have the old name but the name change certificate is there as a supporting document. Then citizenship will be given based on what the name on the PR card is (which will be the new name). If name change is done after citizenship is granted, one would need to reapply for citizenship documents with the new name, which is more work (unless there is an explicit option at the time of citizenship for name change, which I have not found mentioned anywhere)

Trust me that it is much less headache to change name in Canada. Too much bureaucracy and red tape in India. Not only are you required to publish ads in two newspapers, you also have to get 2 public documents/IDs with your new name already on it. You will get stuck in a cycle. How would you get those 2 documents/IDs in new name without having another ID with new name as a proof.
