Leaving Canada whilst waiting for OWP - Spousal Sponsorship

I am just about to submit an inland spousal sponsorship application (along with OWP application) Can I leave Canada for a visit to the USA or my home country in this time? I am currently on an IEC visa, I would be travelling with my Spouse for the duration of these trips.

For inland, both you and your spouse are supposed to be living in Canada. If the trip is short, you should be fine. If you leave for a few months, you may have problems.
