Hello CanadaVisa community,

I am the holder of a German IEC temporary work permit that expires in early October. I have a flight leaving Canada in early November (from Vancouver, via Calgary), about four weeks after the work permit expires.

Is it advisable that I apply for a visitor extension or is it fine to leave Canada after this brief an expiration of the work permit? (I have been told there is a 90-day grace period)
I do not intend to leave Canada in the time between the expiration and the departure.

Thank you kindly for your help!

No - there is no 90 day grace period (this seems to be a common misconception). The 90 days refers to the amount of time you have to apply for apply for restoration once you are out of status.

Since you are remaining in Canada a full month after you work permit expires, I would apply to change your status to visitor. This is the right thing to do - and will ensure your behaviour isn't held against you for future entries into Canada.

scylla,

Thank you for the clarification! I will take heed and apply for a status change.
