From what you guys have said, I would never live in Quebec, no offense to those that love it there. I live in Alberta and just couldn't imagine leaving.
Ok, my problem is the other way around, i would love to take my boyfriends last name but i dont know how it will affect the application. We are hoping to send it off soon after we get married but my passport and all other documents will be in my maiden name. Just wondering if this will be a problem or would i have to keep my maiden name? If anyone knows anything that'd be great, thanks in advance

Liuzhou unfortunately you're wrong about the name changing here and being able to do so by paying for it. Not true... the province of Quebec does NOT allow women to change their family name to that of their husband's NO MATTER how much money they're willing to pay and under any circumstances. The law here doesn't allow it! It's the only province in the country with the silly "law" where regardless of what the woman wants, they can't change their name. It's ridiculous! There's nothing I want more than to take my husband's name and share that with our kids, but I can't as long as we're here. And if ever I move from Quebec (chances are pretty good) guess what I'll be doing first thing? ! Yup... changing my name.
I grew up in B.C. and moved to Montreal as a young teen. I love B.C. and had the best childhood ever. Every time I visit out west I feel like I'm at home... but since moving to Montreal this is my REAL home - this is where I did most of my schooling, made plenty of lasting friendships, became a young lady. grew into a woman and where I've settled in my career.
Montreal is a WONDERFUL city with LOTS to offer anyone of any age! I love it here and would take alot for me to pack up and leave. The only problem with Montreal is it's in Quebec! lol

There are some interesting social programs that if worked, would be great. However the usual incompetance at the provincial level has made most programs a major flop. Of course, they just blame Ottawa.
Other than that, I fail to see plenty of reasons to live here. Quebec is a dying province because it has been hijacked by a bunch of ethnocentric, xenophobic rednecks who believe being independant from Canada will solve all their problems. The rest of the world is taking down walls to benefit from the global economy...Quebec is trying to put them up all in the name of "protecting our culture"...bull plop !
Anyway, that is enough about Quebec...
msgomez, you are probably right. A couple years ago I had a friend who told me she was going to have her name changed because she was getting married outside the country. I was under the impression that if you were married outside Canada it could be done. Perhaps she was mistaken and so am I.

Exactly, no one is perfect, its just all a matter of opinion. I've never beeen anywhere but Alberta so I don't know anything about anywhere except for heresay.. This thread wasn't meant to offend anybody, all it was supposed to was determine about last names... haha I'd say it got a bit carried away
saralune with all due respect and if this comes off as a little biased I apologize but for the most part it is more-so the french canadians that refuse to "get along" with the english canadians! When Irefer to french canadians in my next comments, I don't mean for it to mean ALL of them but a large group for sure. For those that are debating living here, this will sign the deal for you...
Let's face it, they are the more ignorant of the bunch refusing to even try to speak english. The "Office de la Langue Francaise" (Bureau of the French Language, for those that aren't familiar) have taken their ridiculous french laws to the extreme. They insist that all store/restaurant signs are printed so that the french is twice the size of the english... and when they're doubtful they walk around with a ruler measuring to see that they've complied. I've heard of the "Office" fining businesses because the english part of their sign needed to be a cm smaller.
The "Office de la Langue Francaise" fined a man a large sum all because, on his business card, the address (on the french side of the card - they MUST be bilingual) street name said "Lancaster Blvd" instead of "Lancaster Boul." Absolutely ridiculous!
A restaurant on the Quebec/Ontario border (actually located within the province of Quebec) had a situation; one of their garbage can doors said "PUSH" on it - heaven forbid! The "Office de la Langue Francaise" fined the man and told him that if he didn't change the garbage bin they were going to shut his business down! Seriously, get a life! They have nothing better to do than run around with their rulers demanding that we all bow down to the french Gods and obey their every wish. Makes me want to puke!
And for our former Prime Minister to visit the U.S. and beg that they "do business with Quebec" and "Let's form a relationship ans support one another" and then turn around and refuse to put up bilingual signs on the streets and highways, to me, is hypocrytical. Even the stop signs in France say "STOP"! lol... here they must say "ARRET" or there is some serious law breaking going on.
And all this on top of the fact that Quebec does not allow me to take my husband's name... cow dung!
Okay, I'm all done venting! lol... I think I just reminded myself why I need to move!

Even government jobs must be bilingual otherwise you are going to have a problem.... I live in Ontario but work in Quebec. Still I have to be bilingual and refer to both languages at my work. I have nothing against that but still since the last 8 years I find lots of changes in Quebec.

Over and over again Quebec separates itself from the rest of Canada with all these petty laws. Let me tell you, if Quebec separates Montreal will be empty! lol
That being said, yes I'm ranting but i do love Montreal! It's my home and I adore it here. I know we can't change the laws here and yes we have the option of leaving but I can still wish things were different.

I don't personally think it will cause a problem. I had to send my passport(under my maiden name) for immigration purposes a few time althought the application was under my married name and it has never caused me any problem...I also have got a mix of maiden and married name documents in my application for Sponsorship. They know that it takes some time to change documents...

Just another quick Q though, i'm applying outland through London but i will be in Canada, if i change my name will this affect my status? Would it make my passort invalid? And if not and everything goes well would it best to leave it till after i receive PR to send my passport to be changed or do it during the meantime as it only takes a few weeks and can be back before any decisions are made? Ok not so quick lol but hopefully someone can help, thanks
