I want to apply in January 2013 for immigration to Canada under FSWC. But i have one problem. On my passport, last name is not mentioned. My given name is mentioned there which includes two different words (name + Kaur). In all my documents i am using the same name. I have never mentioned family name anywhere. I am the main applicant and not married yet ;). Will the missing surname impact visa process? are there any difficulties one has to face in Canada in future (to get job, driving licence etc in Canada) because of missing last name? Please help. I am really worried.

Nope, the COPR will be issued with the surname Kaur.

the surname field is a must in North America. If you don't have a surname, your full name will be written in your surname and you won't have a first name... I would say get it changed if you can...because once you arrive and they put your full name in Surname, all your documents will be the same.

If you want to change your name in Canada on your Indian passport, you can't do it unless it has been issued from Canada. Even then they won't do it because your old passport will have the same name. You would have to return back to India to get it changed and then you will still have to get your PR changed with the embassy because of the name mismatch. The only time you can change it after is when you get Canadian citizenship.

My advice...change it in India itself.

Thanks for sharing your views :).
I have one more issue that would like to share here. I already took IELTS exam and that was with current passport (missing last name). Now when i will get a new passport with surname addition, do i need to take IELTS again with new name.
Can't i use the same IELTS score? Actually right now my schedule is very tight and also some time constraints as well. If i can use my old score , it will be a great relief for me.

Changing name or Splitting Name.

1. If u want to split your name only then there is no problem.

Example

First Name name

Surname Kaur

2. If you want to change your name in immigration from different then passport, its mean you will have problem in visa issuing and in Canada.

let me tell you the situation: as of now given name on passport is lets say 'xyz Kaur', but surname is blank. I am going to take IELTS with this name very soon. My new name will be: given name 'xyz Kaur' and surname 'Bains'. I am really very short of time to make add surname on my passport. but I heard so many problems due to missing surname on passport for North Amercia and now thinking that whatever the case may be but i have to get a new passport with complete name.
I have seen many reviews showing problems they faced while getting Visa as well as once they landed in Canada.
If this issue is really going to impact me in future then should I get a new passport before applying? Do you think that if i will have my name as it is 'xyz Kaur' (given name only), i won't face any troubles? What would be my first and last name on PR card then?
Please reply coz i have almost decided to apply for a new passport but it is really risky for me 'coz i am running short of time to keep all the things on track.

please do not waste your time in discussion get your NIC mean national identity card with new full name then apply passport.........then take the test of IELTS.........i have faced this problme even Nova Scotia sent my file back cause of my wife name she did not have last name so i filled up the same name in two colums..............then i get her new NIC and Passport showing Nikanama(Marriage Certificate to nic and Passport authroties) so if you are serious take the action and complete the task as soon as possible........you can get NEW IELTS date by giving small amount of money.......so be confident and do it........

You won't have any issues...as I said earlier you will still get things done as long as you know what you are dealing with and you make sure you fill your applications correctly....North Americans do not like this confusion but they won't reject you solely based on this...it is just that you would have to live in Canada with only your surname until you get your canadian citizenship..a friend of mine came from India and the Consulate I guess knew this issue so they did not give him any trouble and entered his name with surname and first name even though he had only had first name in the passport.......It all depends on the Visa officer your file gets assigned to..

about IELTS I would say go ahead and do it...and also submit a name change request with the Gazette of India...keep that copy with you...if you want to get your name changed at a later point of time you will surely need that...the only issue I can see that the Indian Consulate in Canada can give you is that why did not you change your name in India itself when you got the gazzette published....

the forms validation part as mentioned by awai ali....my friend just entered his last name in the surname field and the first name that he wanted regardless of what was on passport and apparently they accepted it without any issues..

Hi Miss Bains,

I got the same problem. In Passport Given Name = "Surinder Pal Singh". But Sur Name is blank.
I registered for IELTS with First Name and Family Name both as "Surinder Pal Singh" and I am going to proceed like this.
Also, I am fine if later Canada Embassy use "Surinder Pal Singh" as my Surname. But my only worry is will i face any problem in the process because of this? IELTS score matching to PR application or anything like this?
